Kimjongilia Festival

In Korea flower festival that is displayed only one variety of flower is successfully held every year, differently with the International Flower Exhibition and Flower Show that are displayed thousands or tens of thousands of species of beautiful flowers.
This is the Kimjongilia Festival that is held to celebrate February 16, Day of the Shining Star, the birthday of Chairman Kim Jong Il.
Kimjongilia is a new variety of tuberous flower which belongs to family begoniaceae that Kamo Mototeru, a Japanese horticulturist bred devoting his soul and energy after over 20 years’ long research in February Juche 77 (1988) and is named after the august name of Kim Jong Il.
Kimjongilia is a famous flower that was awarded gold medals also in the International Flower Exhibitions consecutively because it has especially large red blossoms and green heart-shaped leaves giving fresh and strong feelings.
Kimjongilia Festival that has been held every year from Juche 86 (1997), is held for the 20th in February Juche 105 (2016) to celebrate the 74th birthday of Chairman Kim Jong Il.
The theme for the 20th Kimjongilia Festival is “Kimjongilia full blown in the Songun Korea that leaps and bounds with youthful vigour.”
There were total of over 300 000 pots of Kimjongilia displayed in the Kimjongilia Festival in the last periods and tens of thousands of citizens of the DPRK, overseas Koreans and foreigners are visiting to this venue.
The scale of the festival became larger and larger as days went by, today it developed into the international flower festival that are participated with embassies of different countries in the DPRK, international organizations, friendship groups as well as Korean people.
There is also public experimental discussion about the culture technique of Kimjongilia in the festival and diploma and prize were conferred on the units and individuals who exhibited excellent flowers.
Kimjongilia Festival will draw the attention of the flower circles of the world and be successfully held in the future.
