The International Central Committee for Songun Study issued the following statement today on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the work of the publication of the work by the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL ' titled ' The Songun-based Revolutionary Line Is a Great Revolutionary Line of Our Era and an Ever-Victorious Banner of Our Revolution.":
On the 29th of January it was 18 years since comrade KIM JONG IL published the excellent work ' The Songun-based Revolutionary Line Is a Great Revolutionary Line of Our Era and an Ever-Victorious Banner of Our Revolution."
The work comprehensively clarifies the idea and theory of Songun (military-first) politics greatly significant in accomplishing the cause of Juche-based socialism and the cause of human independence.
In the work, Comrade KIM JONG IL expounded the essence, nature and great vitality of the Songun revolutionary leadership and Songun politics of the Workers' Party of Korea. He also gave tasks to put the Juche-based revolutionary cause on a new stage under the Songun leadership.
He said the Songun politics, based on President Kim Il Sung's idea and line of attaching importance to the military affairs, fully reflects the requirements of the times and developing revolution. He also said the politics is a socialist political mode based on a proper settlement of the issue of the driving force of revolution and dignified Juche-oriented politics.
The long history of the Korean revolution includes two revolutionary wars against powerful imperialists, two-stage social revolution and the struggle for protecting the socialist nation's dignity and sovereignty from the imperialists' moves to stifle it.
The DPRK has always emerged victorious because it has adhered to the principle of Songun.
Experience gained from practice goes to prove that the Songun politics provides definite guarantee for a victorious advance of the socialist cause.

In the work the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL he glorious history of the Korean revolution that was started and has triumphed under the banner of Songun and comprehensively deals with the essence, features, validity and vitality of the Songun politics of the Workers' Party of Korea and theoretical and practical issues concerning the politics.
The work serves as an encyclopedic document giving perfect answers to the issues arising in the struggle to achieve the independence of the popular masses and precious ideological and theoretical guidelines to be always held fast to in building a thriving nation and accomplishing the revolutionary cause of Juche.
The work clarifies many important questions concerning the building of socialism in the contemporary epoch .

DPRK's Leading Newspapers Call for Holding aloft Banner of Self-reliance
Pyongyang, January 30 (KCNA) -- Leading newspapers here in their editorials on Saturday call for successfully carrying out the new five-year plan under the uplifted banner of self-reliance.
Rodong Sinmun says that the 8th Congress of the Party laid great emphasis on winning a fresh victory in the socialist construction, holding fast to self-reliance.

It is the fundamental guarantee for successfully implementing the new five-year plan for the national economic development to hold higher the banner of self-reliance.
The general orientation of the five-year plan for the national economic development is to lay solid foundations for reenergizing the overall national economy and improving the people's standard of living by concentrating efforts on the main links in the whole chain of economic development.
Self-reliance is by no means a temporary countermeasure for overcoming trials and difficulties but the immutable path of our revolution.

Comrade Miriam Pellegrini Ferri had been an Italian anti-fascist partisan in World War Two . She became an staunch anti-revisionist who founded the Italian Group of Dialectal Materialists. She became a supporter of People's Korea and advocate of the Juche Idea .

In the report on the work of the Seventh Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea he made between January 5 and 7, Kim Jong Un set it as the basic tasks facing the construction field during the new five-year plan period to massively carry out the capital construction including housing construction so as to provide the people with higher civilized living conditions.
He said: By concentrating efforts on the construction of 50,000 flats in Pyongyang, the construction field should set the annual plans for building 10,000 flats every year, starting from this year, scrupulously organize the construction operation and guidance for implementing the plans and thus basically settle the housing problem for the Pyongyang citizens.
25,000 houses should be built in the Komdok area, a leading nonferrous mineral producer where a large contingent of workers live, transforming it into a mining city with no comparison in the world, he added.
More beautiful future will be brought to this land thanks to Kim Jong Un with the firm faith and will to build a socialist paradise where the people enjoy a happy life.

While giving field guidance to the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill in December Juche 103(2014), the respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un gave a task to build a new modern bag cloth process for schoolbag production.
Building the bag cloth production process presupposed a lot of agonies and failures, but the technicians and workers of the factory finally completed it with the help of specialists.
Han Yong Gil, Head of the General Weaving Workshop, says:
"When he visited our factory in January 2016, the respected Marshal Kim Jong Un pleasantly touched different kinds of various schoolbags one by one, which had been made with our materials, equipment and efforts.
When looking round the bag cloth production process, he was very pleased and warmly said: How good it is to make them by ourselves! Self-reliance is the only way out. The spirit of self-reliance cannot be bartered for valuables.

January 24 is the International Day of Education.
It was instituted at the 44th Plenary Meeting of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly held in December 2018 with the aim of providing the people with full rights to education and strengthening the international cooperation for equal, comprehensive and qualitative education.
The right to receive education is the most fundamental and important of the rights man should be provided by the state and society.
In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea the universal 11-year compulsory education was enforced already tens of years ago. Now with the enforcement of the universal 12-year compulsory education, the people are fully provided with the right to receive education compulsorily from the time when they reach the school age.
Schools have been built only for one or two children in deep mountain villages and on isolated islands, and teachers go there to teach them. Disabled children are also enjoying the equal rights to learning.
Orphanages and primary and middle schools for orphans have been wonderfully built under the state concern.
The state fully provides all people with the right to free education.
It fully bears the expenses for education.
It ensures not only preschool, primary and secondary education but also higher and social education free of charge.
All people are fully provided with the right to receive education in modern educational conditions and excellent environment.
In recent years active efforts have been made to renovate the teaching conditions and environment of the educational institutions in accordance with the trend of development of advanced education and the pedagogical demand.
Bases for extracurricular education and activities including the schoolchildren's palaces and halls and Children's Union camps have been built in all parts of the country, where the schoolchildren can develop their talents. In addition, the Grand People's Study House and the Sci-Tech Complex serve as the centre of social education for all people and as the centre of making all people well-versed in science and technology.
Well-organized tele-education system has been established, under which all members of the society can receive higher education while working. So all people are acquiring modern science and technology and versatile knowledge in their work places.
The Korean people are storing up their knowledge for development of the country under the state benefits.

The centrepiece and basis for the DPRK’s economic strategy for the next 5 years is self-reliance and self development . The mainstream media are slandering the DPRK’s self-reliance and moaning about the DPRK ‘cutting itself ‘ off from the world and being a ‘closed and isolationist country ‘ etc . They are claiming that self-reliance does not work . Meanwhile the new regime in the US is chattering about ‘cutting off all avenues ‘ for the DPRK .
In fact self-reliance , an application of the Juche idea , has produced real miracles in the DPRK ( a little known fact is that the famous Cambridge economist Professor Joan V Robinson referred to the DPRK as the ‘Korean Economic Miracle ‘ in 1964) . The DPRK thanks to self-reliance experienced phenomenal economic growth rates in the late 1950s when the increase in industrial output value hit 36 per cent in the period between 1957 and 1961 .
Self-reliance means that a country's domestic resources are maximised to the full . Money that was once spent on costly foreign imports can instead be spent on health , education and improving living standards or invested in industry or both .
Once during the children’s performance at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace our delegation saw a skit by children on the theme of self-reliance ; the story was that there was a village of bears and squirrels , they needed to build a HydroElectric Power station , the hardworking squirrels resolved to build the Hydroelectric Power Station themselves by their own efforts but the lazy bears instead proposed to buy a Hydro Power Station from the Elephants . A bear returns in despair from the Elephants Village because the Elephants had demanded more fruit than they expected to hand over for the power station . The bears fall about in dismay but the squirrels get to work and by applying self-reliance build a power station . This children's skit may seem amusing but contains an important truth that big countries will not give stuff away for nothing but will demand a higher and higher price for it .
Some people waffle that the DPRK’s self-reliance is an ‘illusion ‘ and that the DPRK was dependent on ‘Soviet aid ‘ or ‘Chinese aid ‘ . However the DPRK actually only received a modest amount of aid after the Fatherland Liberation War , The war damage caused by the US was estimated to be 16,661,622 million U.S. dollars whereas the aid from the socialist countries amounted to 500 million US dollars , less than 5 per cent of the cost of the damage . The USSR imposed virtual sanctions on the DPRK in 1962 because the DPRK refused to go along with the revisionist policies of Khruschov . As to China , they demanded settlement of foreign trade accounts in dollars back in 1992 .
The mainstream media like to portray south Korea as a success story in order to slander People’s Korea and self-reliance . However the reality is that south Korea is burdened with enormous internal and external debts. South Korea’s internal debt stands at 240 per of its GDP( meaning it is impossible to repay ) and the external debt is 503.1 billion US dollars . South Korea is a land of slums , poverty and inequality.
The British academic the late Malcolm Caldwell wrote
"What is clear is that ,deprived of, massive loans ,US military propping , and integration into the international capitalist economy, south Korea would collapse, whereas-abiding by Juche , North Korea can stand independent indefinitely "(Malcolm Caldwell "The Wealth of Some Nations " Zed Press 1977).
Self-reliance and Juche are the way forward and will bring about a great victory !

production is impossible without computers in the IT era."
Humans have been here long before computers however as a collective and through advancing as one we created the IT era followed by dominating, and continuing to dominate the IT era by advancing it through breakthroughs in technology.
With that breakthrough we are showing our dominance as the masters of advancement in our lives. We come together as humans to advance it together, to dismiss this shows a lack of understanding in the mind of man.
In our IT era we have always been social, we are always a collective, but unfortunately some collectives are led astray by those who wish to exploit the social and collective nature of man.
Easy example... Work! In our society, we have to work in conditions and serve as a "prison sentence" and work under poor pay and zero incentives along with poor morale. This affects the collective in their work and it's a poison which spreads across a society rapidly.
For namesake we'll use the name John... John is sick of being treated badly, he's working 50 hours plus and struggling due to the poor pay in his skilled job in IT. John thinks about resigning but John knows he faces the future without employment, which causes further stress and less money due to the poor social security of the state. John, then has no other choice to continue working in poor conditions being exploited whilst his boss gets richer.
The exploiting class doesn’t change… The exploiting class meets the advancements that were made by the collective. Philosopher Karl Marx said workers in a capitalist society are exploited insofar as they are forced to sell their labor power to capitalists for less than the full value of the commodities they produce with their labor.
To summarize we as progressives and followers of the Juche we must counter the exploiting class at every turn to ensure the foundations of people first, man being in control of his destiny and to dominate our conditions for the betterment of our lives. We must do this under the banner of KIMILSUNGISM & KIMJONGILISM!

On Juche , Songun , Kimilsungism-Kimjongilsm and the development of People's Korea by a member of KFA Brazil Rio De Janerio State
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is one of the socialist countries that withstood the stormy times of the 80s and 90s, where a large part of the socialist bloc dismantled, and today it attracts great attention from all over the world for its technical, scientific, military and social advances.
As a socialist country, people who study it end up confronting an issue that can be somewhat confusing at first. Which ideology guides Korean socialism? Is it Marxism-Leninism? Any other variation apart from this?
Searching, people come across new terms and unknown names: Juche and Songun. And can still find Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism. Here great confusion can begin. What does each of these things mean and which one is the guide to the Korean revolution?
To understand, it is essential to know the history of the Korean revolution.
Kim Il Sung was the great Leader who organized the struggle to expel Japanese invaders from Korea and founded the DPRK. He developed the Korean revolution using Marxism-Leninism as a springboard, which he studied illegally with the help of his comrades, after realizing that the only way to liberate the nation was through armed struggle.
During this period of study and organization of the struggle, he noticed great problems among other so-called Korean communists: these tried to mechanically apply Marxism-Leninism without taking into account the reality and the particular demands of Korea, and there were those who thought that it was up to the Soviet Union the role of liberating the country, not the Korean people themselves.
It was from this reality that President Kim Il Sung conceived the so-called Juche and Songun ideas. In rejection of the servilism and dogmatism of these so-called communists, he defined that the revolution can and must be carried out by each people, and not by others, that each people is the driving force of their revolutions and, therefore, must be supported by it. And also, that the experiences and contributions of others should not be interpreted in a dogmatic and blind way, but in a creative way, in view of the peculiar contradictions before you. If a person tries to follow the contributions of others mechanically, like a recipe, he cannot avoid another end than the failure of the revolution and the socialist construction. And as a support base for Juche, Songun clarifies the importance of weapons in the revolution, the only guarantee of independence and the victory of socialism.
Thus, the great Leader reached the historic cause of the liberation of the country, laid the foundations for socialism, and, further on, he was able to defend the country from the imperialist attack and rebuild it even in the face of innumerable damages. And it proves his correct direction the short time it took the country to rebuild and industrialize from the catastrophic damage of a genocidal war.
A little later, around the 70s and 80s, Comrade Kim Jong Il, son of Kim Il Sung, through his theoretical and ideological work in the Party, developed and enriched the Juche idea as a science and synthesized the revolutionary thought of the great Leader as Kimilsungism. In keeping with the principles of the Juche idea of independence, creativity and independent consciousness, Koreans advanced under the leadership of Kim Il Sung, building socialism not in the Soviet or Chinese way, but in the Korean way. Not looking for answers to Korean problems in these countries, but thinking with your own head about your own problems. In such a way that even in the face of harmful trends in these countries, Korea has remained steadfast in the same path, unchanged. It sailed between the two giants in an agitated ocean without losing his purposes and principles.
And again as proof of the correct orientations of comrades Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, socialist Korea was able to move forward vigorously and develop even when the difficult times came. By maintaining this independent position in ideology and politics, Korea was able to move forward with its own efforts despite the turbulence in the socialist bloc
As the transition of leadership of the revolution took place in the chaotic 1990s, now under the guidance of Comrade Kim Jong Il, new problems and urgent demands were presented in the face of the revolution. In accord with Kimilsungism, Kim Jong Il gave the theoretical and practical answers to the prevailing reality. Faced with the burning situation generated by hostile forces that, after the fall of European socialist countries, turned their attention to Korea, and threatened the security of the country and the revolution, added to the consecutive natural disasters, the Leader developed the so-called Songun politics, the materialization of the aforementioned Songun idea in politics, which places the People's Army at the forefront of national security and socialist construction, as the driving force responsible for the survival and advancement of the revolution, and defined military affairs as the number one priority for the state.
Thanks to this, Korea was able to go through these difficult times in history and safeguard socialism and leave the bases for the construction of an independent and self-sufficient economy, counting on the strength and heroism of the People's Army led by General Kim Jong Il who prepared it as powerful armed forces of revolution and people, visiting their units day and night across the country.
Kim Jong Il wisely led the revolution, keeping President Kim Il Sung in perpetual high esteem and his revolutionary idea as an invariable flag until the 17th of 2011, when he passed away during his endless trips of field guidance around the country.
When the respected comrade Kim Jong Un took the helm of the revolution, the same procedure, of crucial importance for the revolution, was done. Keeping the Leader Kim Jong Il in perpetual high esteem, eternalizing his life and contributions, he studied and systematized his revolutionary idea as Kimjongilism, which joined Kimilsungism, giving rise to Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un said:
“This idea synthesizes the thoughts and exploits of the great Leader Kim Il Sung and the great Leader Kim Jong Il, who transformed our Republic into the most prestigious and powerful socialist state in all history, and clearly sets out the course and the ways to culminate the socialist cause with state power as a political weapon. [...] In order to continue and remain faithful to the noble ideal of the great Leader and great Leader, who throughout their lives considered the people as heaven and devoted themselves totally to them, our Party defined the priority to the popular masses as the essence of Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism, the guiding idea of the revolution, and determined as its most fundamental task to mold in its activities and those of the State the original concept and philosophy of the people.”
Holding Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism as the guiding idea of the revolution constitutes, as in the past, the firm guarantee that the revolution will not deviate even from its basic principles and that the socialist cause, the cause of Juche, of the independence of the popular masses will be infallibly fulfilled.

KCNA Commentary on Japan's Sinister Intention of Continental Aggression
Pyongyang, January 28 (KCNA) -- Japan persists in arms buildup.
It is mulling spending the greatest-ever expenses for arms buildup, as evidenced by its projected inclusion of the development of next-generation fighter jets of the Air "Self-Defense Force" costing tens of billions of ￥ in the budget bill for 2021.
It has also officially begun examining the installment of long-range cruise missiles on the two latest Aegis warships.
The cruise missile is reportedly capable of striking any targets outside their striking range.
While speeding up the development of supersonic missiles with a striking range of over 500 km, Japan has mapped out a research plan for coping with hypersonic gliding weapons. It is also pressing ahead with its plan for neutralizing "enemy" drones with laser weapons mounted on vehicles.
This is an obvious sign of the Japanese reactionaries' ever-more undisguised moves to build a military giant and realize their wild ambition for overseas expansion, which vividly shows that the island nation's plan for continental aggression has reached an extreme phase.
At present, Japan is busy sweeping under the carpet its sinister intention of aggression, while resorting to reckless military moves.
It is playing all sorts of tricks to relax the vigilance of the international community, while deceptively describing the issue of possession of the "ability for attacking enemy base", for which it faced a backlash from the world public, as a step for "bolstering the deterrent."
As a leopard cannot change its spots, Japan can never cover up its black-hearted intention to launch reinvasion.
Japanese media openly say that Japan's ceaseless purchase and development of weapons are mainly aimed at putting political and military pressure on China and Russia and containing them.
A Western magazine exposed that Japan has buckled down to military maneuvers to cope with the advance of China and that its "Self-Defense Forces" are being gradually modeled on the army of erstwhile imperial Japan.
All these facts prove that the arms buildup pursued by the descendants of samurais is a hegemonic move to secure the status of the "leader" in Asia and a dangerous move for continental aggression that disturbs regional peace and stability.
Now is not the first half of the 20th century but the 21st century, and the dynamic relations among regional countries have undergone a radical change.
The international community keeps its eye on the arms buildup of Japan, the principal enemy of peace, always remaining vigilant against it.
If Japan persists in such reckless arms buildup, far from drawing a lesson from its disgraceful history of aggression, it is bound to face miserable ruin. -0-

Japan Should Face up to Trend of Times: KCNA Commentary
Pyongyang, January 26 (KCNA) -- Japan's bad habit of committing mischievous acts and finding fault with others has surfaced again since the outset of this year.
Recently, Japan's Minister of Defense Kishi said that "Japan is doing its best to collect and analyze information about the north's military moves."
This is nothing but a scream let out by those in fear of the DPRK's matchless military muscle developing at a world-startling speed.
The DPRK has built up its tremendous military muscle capable of firmly defending socialism, the dignity and life of its people and permanently guaranteeing the peaceful and stable life of the people.
Japan, which has resorted to vicious moves against the DPRK, spying on it all the year round with satellites and various other intelligence means, is again making a fuss, inciting hostility toward the DPRK. Clear is its ulterior motive.
It is because the DPRK's powerful defense capabilities for preemptively containing any hostile forces' threats outside its territory prevent Japan from realizing its wild ambition for continental aggression, and firmly preserve regional peace and security.
Only the Japanese reactionaries and other peace wreckers let out a string of rubbish, feeling very uneasy about the DPRK's measures for bolstering defence capabilities to defend the sovereignty and rights to existence and development of the country.

Juche And Opera By John Marchant
The operatic arts in one form or another, have been around since the 16th Century with Jacopo Perie "Lost Define" being the first example of an opera. At the time of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), the Peking Opera emerged on the scene. In the past, Korea had a long history of dramatical music in the form of Changuk. As a fan of opera, my favourite ones are the works of Giacomo Puccini and George Bizet, with a foreway into Wagner on occasions. I came across modern Korean opera when I visited the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and went to operatic performances in Pyongyang and purchased many CDs and DVDs of that genre.
I was enthralled by the innovative quality and accessibility of the Korean revolutionary operas. These operatic productions provide for the viewer and listener a graphic illustration of modern Korean history and of the ideological durability of the Juche Idea. The operas composed in the DPRK presents a clear social-political message which is packaged in an entertaining manner. The most remarkable successes achieved by Socialist Korea in the sector of culture under the leadership of Kim Jong IL. It was in September 1969 that Kim Jong IL put forward the policy of bringing about a revolution in the art of opera aimed at doing away with obsolete patterns in this genre. Kim Jong IL set as the main task of the revolution in the art of opera to make operatic creations contemporary and popular on the basis of its revolutionary content and national form. The presentation of several new principles of producing operas of a Korean style, performing the songs in a stanzaic way introducing "Panchang" (off-stage chorus) ensures that the dancing was appropriate to the drama and brought a three-dimensional revolving stage with the development of the plot.
Kim Jong IL gave a talk to creative workers in the fields of art and literature in September 1974. This later became known as the work "On The Art of Opera". In this work by Kim Jong IL there are chapters on "The Times & Opera", "Opera Music" and "Opera Stage Presentation". "On The Art of Opera" can be regarded as a textbook for gaining artistic and ideological guidance in the performing arts and make opera serve as a means in the goal of human emancipation. Kim Jong IL gave many talks and wrote many essays on the subject of operas and musical performances over the course of many decades.
The Juche perspective on culture is to view this area of creative endeavour as being a vital one. Without a socialist culture as an important manifestation of ideological consciousness, there could not be genuine socialism. Kim Jong IL placed culture and the arts at the forefront in the struggle for moulding the socialist man and woman to become the independent and dignified subjects of history. In the USSR and the East European Socialist countries, the ideological impact of culture was believed to be of a secondary significance to the material base in society. This position taken by the ruling parties in the Soviet Union & Eastern Europe exposed areas of cultural life to the machinations of the imperialists and their agents, thus resulting in the downfall of those socialist societies in the late 1980s-early 1990s.
Kim Jong IL saw to it that a prototype opera was produced by adopting the revolutionary drama "The Sea of Blood" created by Kim IL Sung during the Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Struggle (1925-1945). Five major operas were inaugurated into compositions by Kim Jong IL in the early 1970s. These model operas were "The Sea of Blood", "A True Daughter of The Party", "Song of Mount Kumgang-san", "The Flower Girl", and "Tell, Oh Forest". These operas became known as the "Pibada" (Sea of Blood) style performances. There were less known revolutionary operas which came on the stage at that time (the 1970s) such as "Women of Namgang Village", "The Youth Orchard", "One Summer On The Tuman-Gang River", "Song of Paradise", "Under The Grateful Sun" and We Shall Meet Again On The Reunification Square".
My two best-loved DPRK operas are "The Sea of Blood'' and "The True Daughter of The Party". These two operas give a vivid illustration of the epic fight of the Korean people for national and social liberation. "The Sea of Blood'' is based upon the trials and tribulations of Ggot Bun, the heroine of this opera, in 1930s Japanese occupied Korea. Ggot Bun becomes more and more politicized and takes the path of revolutionary struggle. The 1971 produced opera "The True Daughter of The Party" centres around Korean People's Army Nurse Kang Yon Ok while fighting in the Korean War (1950-53). The main character Kang Yon Ok with her evacuated patients overcomes the US aggressors and the south Korean puppet troops and attains her desire to be a member of the Workers' Party of Korea. Kang Yon Ok. The heroine of "The True Daughter of The Party'' is killed by a US air raid while getting her wounded comrades to safety. The melody "Where Are You, Dear General?", elucidates the inner world outlook of Kang Yon Ok and this song can be heard throughout the DPRK very often. Two ultimate "feel good" operatic productions from Peoples Korea must be "Song Of The Kumgang-san Mountains" and "Song Of Paradise" Both these operas evokes to the audience the joy of living in the blissful land of Juche under the loving care of the Leader and the Party.
Over the years I have been able to accumulate the CDs and DVDs of various DPRK operas by the renowned Mansudae Art Troupe and the Samjiyon Orchestra. I have fortunate enough to have witnessed such gala performances as the" 70 Glorious Years of the Republic'' held in the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium on September 8th, 2018. Actually, in 1973 the Mansudae Art Troupe staged concerts at The Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, which caused a sensation among the public at the time. There should be more cultural exchanges and cooperation between the United Kingdom and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. A return visit to Great Britain by the Mansudae Art Troupe is long overdue!!
The international art community has enthusiastically acclaimed DPRK operas as a culmination of aesthetic technique and expertise. An Austrian Operatic Connoisseur Doctor Gustav Schwartz stated although Milan, Rome and Vienna were considered to be the centres of operatic creation, that in this day and age Pyongyang is the new capital city of opera and classical music. Interest in the performing arts of the DPRK is growing to the point where the School Of Asian & African Studies, University of London held a seminar on "Sea of Blood: A Night At the North Korean Opera", a few years ago.
In the DPRK we have seen the flowering of a renaissance over the course of six decades in culture and arts. This tradition is carried on by Kim Jong Un in all aspects of culture in Peoples Korea. The overwhelming narrative of DPRK opera is to promote the values of chajusong (Independence) of the working masses and to uphold the dignity of man, the social being. The arts and music of the DPRK raise the treasure house of humanity's collective culture to new heights. If you have not seen a Korean Revolutionary Opera yet, please take the opportunity to do so!

South Korean mass media including Jaju Sibo and Newsis reported that Yang Gyeong-su was elected as the chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions at the 10th election of its leadership.
One million-strong unionists ordered me to open a new era through an uninterrupted action. I would never disappoint them and they will see the unprecedented general strike. We will put spurs to the enactment of law on punishment of businesses causing industrial disaster at once, said Yang.
The south Korean people have expected peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula after the advent of the present government. But it has not been realized, it seems that their hope and expectation changed into discouragement and anger. We also witnessed the reality that south Korea is powerless before the Uncle Sam, Yang noted at a news conference held on January 14.
We will launch an obstinate campaign for the sake of safety of the workers and the drive for independence and peaceful reunification, he said at the press conference.

The great leader comrade KIM JONG IL was born 79 years ago on Mt Paetku , the son of anti-Japanese revolutionary guerrillas .He was the successor to the great Juche revolutionary cause started by the great leader comrade KIM IL SUNG .Comrade KIM JONG IL led the Korean revolution to victory by developing the Juche idea in depth and adminstering the Songun(army-first politics) . Thanks to the leadership of comrade KIM JONG IL the DPRK was turned into a socialist military power and a nuclear state .Moreover comrade KIM JONG IL worked hard for Korean reunification and held the first-ever inter-Korean summit. Comrade KIM JONG IL defended socialism and fought for global independence .
It is for all the reasons above that the Korean people and world progressive people uphold the leadership and legacy of the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL and proudly celebrate the anniversary of his birth as the Day of the Shining Star.

250-mile Journey for National Liberation
Pyongyang, January 22 (KCNA) -- It has been 96 years since President Kim Il Sung made a 250-mile journey for national liberation.
The President left alone Mangyongdae in Pyongyang for Badaogou in China at the age of 13 and the Korean people are calling this course the 250-mile journey for national liberation.
True to the intention of his father that a man born in Korea must have a good knowledge of Korea, he came to Mangyongdae for learning early in the 1920s. Then, he received the news that his father had been arrested again by the Japanese police.
With a firm resolve to take vengeance for his father, his family and the Korean nation, he left Mangyongdae on January 22, Juche 14 (1925).
He had spent only two years back in Korea. In those days, he got a clear understanding that Japanese imperialism was the most heinous destroyer of the liberty and dignity of the Korean people and a vicious aggressor and plunderer imposing unbearable poverty and hunger upon them and came to have a firm belief that such aggressors could be driven out through a struggle only.
He arrived in Phophyong of Kim Hyong Jik County, Ryanggang Province (then Huchang County of North Phyongan Province) after the lapse of 13 days and crossed the Amnok River with a grim resolve not to return before Korea had become independent.
Remembering those days, the President in his reminiscences "With the Century" wrote as follows:
"I looked back at the mountains in the motherland over and again with sorrow and indignation. I thought: My dear Korea, I am leaving you. I know I cannot live even for a moment away from you, but I am crossing the Amnok to win you back. Across this river is a foreign land, but I will not forget you, even in there. Wait for me, my Korea."
Keeping his pledge made in his teens, the President achieved the historic cause of national liberation in August 1945 by leading the anti-Japanese revolutionary war to victory. -0-
Immortal Feats for Building Independent National Economy
Pyongyang, January 22 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung built in the DPRK an independent national economy that serves for its people and develops in reliance on its resources and the efforts of its people without dependence on others.
After Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule (August 15, 1945), the President clarified that economic independence should be firmly provided to achieve the complete independence and sovereignty and prosperity of the country and attached a prime importance to the work for laying a foundation for the building of an independent national economy.
With the belief that the way to breaking through difficulties is to rely on its own effort, technology and resources, not on any assistance or the established theory, he had led the working masses to fully display the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance with the consciousness of being the master of the country.
At the 6th Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea held in August Juche 42 (1953), he set forth the basic line of socialist economic construction on giving priority to the growth of the heavy industry while simultaneously developing the light industry and agriculture and energetically guided the struggle for its realization.
He saw to it that machine factories were built across the country to establish the powerful heavy industry with the machine-building industry as its core, and aroused the workers and technicians to the production of motor vehicles, tractors, excavators, bulldozers, electric locomotives and various kinds of machine tools.
He took steps to increase the coal production and propel the construction of hydro-power stations and thermal power plants simultaneously. He also worked heart and soul for building the country's raw material, fuel and power bases and developing its railway transport, including the electrification of railways.
Thanks to his wise leadership, the historic cause of socialist industrialization was accomplished in the country in 14 years.
Today, the DPRK people are vigorously waging the struggle for developing the country's economy and improving the people's livelihood under the banner of self-reliance, in reliance on the solid foundation of the independent national economy provided by the President and strengthened by the guidance of the Party. -0-

The International Central Committee for Songun Study issued the following statement today concerning the
successful holding of the historic 8th Congress of the great Workers' Party of Korea and the magnificent military parade that was held to celebrate the Congress ;
The historic 8th Congress of the great Workers' Party of Korea(WPK) was successfully held in Pyongyang the capital of the Korean revolution from the 5th of January to the 13th of January . The Congress was held in a highly militant atmosphere . It was attended by a great number of delegates . The fact that the Congress could be held despite the worldwide pandemic and the sanctions of the imperialists is a great achievement which is due to the Songun idea and Juche Idea .
The 8th Congress of the WPK has charted out a great programme of self-reliant socialist construction . At the same time it called for the raising the national defence capabilities of the DPRK and rejected any illusions about imperialism.
Reflecting the will of the people of the DPRK and the masses of the Party members the Congress elected respected Marshal KIM JONG UN as General Secretary of the WPK , the top post of the Korean revolution .
In celebration of the 8th Congress of the WPK , a magnificent military parade with the most modern weaponry was held . The military parade both demonstrated the high level of modernization of the Korean People's Army as well as the single hearted unity .
We are convinced that the 8th of Congress of the WPK will greatly enthuse the Korean people to achieve a new great upsurge in socialist construction upholding the banner of self-reliance.

Forward Along the Great Road of Self-reliance Charted by the 8th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea-special article by Dr Dermot Hudson
The 8th Congress of the Workers Party of Korea(WPK) was held amidst the high expectations of the Korean people and world progressive people including Juche idea and Songun idea followers.
Many of the enemies of People’s Korea hoped that the Congress would not be held but it was held despite the sanctions of the reactionary imperialist forces , the Covid 19 pandemic crisis and the floods and typhoons in the DPRK in the early autumn of 2020. This in itself shows the durability , superiority and indestructible nature of the socialist system of the DPRK . Other enemies of People’s Korea had hoped for ‘reform’ and ‘opening up ‘ to be adopted as well as capitulation to imperialism but instead the 8th Congress of the WPK ,presided over by respected Marshal KIM JONG UN , smashed these illusions .
The 8th WPK Congress adopted as one of the main watchwords and slogans for the coming years ‘ ‘ Self -reliance ‘ ( and also ‘ Believing in the people as in heaven and single-hearted unity ) . At the Congress respected Marshal KIM JONG UN stressed the need to increase the DPRK’s nuclear deterrent , the DPRK is not going to fall into the trap that Libya fell into namely giving up its nuclear programme in its infancy or the USSR which under Khruschov melted down tanks and guns and later under Gorbachov scrapped hundreds of ICBMs . At the same time Marshal KIM JONG UN showed that the DPRK has no illusions about US imperialism as he declared that ‘ whoever takes power in the US, its entity and the real intention of its policy toward the DPRK would never change’ . This is indeed true , the DPRK is not going to repeat the mistakes of the revisionist-led former socialist countries or of Libya or Iraq . The DPRK’s nuclear deterrent is not going away !.
The imperialists and reactionaries are now denouncing the 8th Congress of the WPK because instead of opting for so-called reform and ‘opening up ‘, the Congress instead stressed self-reliance and increasing the unified guidance of the state . As Respected Marshal
KIM JONG UN said “ The independent, planned and people-oriented characters of the national economy should be strengthened. To this end, it is necessary to raise the functions of the state that organizes economic affairs, and ensure unified management of products on the principle of making sure that the fruition of the economic activities is channelled into promoting the well-being of the people”
A people-orientated economy cannot be a market economy nor can it be a dependent economy . Increasing the role of planning in the economy is a rational thing to do because an economy like nature needs to be controlled and harnessed for the benefit of humans .
Some say that the DPRK should open up but this begs the question open up to what and to whom ? Is not a fact that if you leave the door of your home open , then thieves and robbers can enter the home and steal valuables or vandals can come in and trash the place .
Self-reliance is a vital necessity not only to beat the sanctions of the imperialist hostile forces but to maintain socialism and achieve prosperity .
As well as making a powerful declaration of self-reliance and socialist planning the 8th congress of the WPK also called for a struggle to eliminate anti-socialist and non-socialist elements .
Reading the report of respected Marshal KIM JONG UN and the other materials of the 8th Congress I felt very excited , the 8th Congress of the WPK is a powerful manifesto for building Juche socialism .I am sure that the DPRK will advance more speedily down the great road of self-reliance laid down by the 8th Congress of the WPK .
