On the 24th of December it will be 29 years since the 19th plenary meeting of the 6th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea decided to elect comrade KIM JONG IL as Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army placing him at the head of the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK which stood in confrontation with US imperialism and world imperialism . Comrade KIM JONG IL as KPA Supreme Commander led the KPA along the victorious road of Songun(army-first ) and Juche .
At the time the international situation was complex . The USSR once considered as bastion of socialism by many ended its existence after the betrayal of the modern revisionists who were the servants of imperialism and the US imperialists declared that there was now a 'New World Order ' in which there would no room for socialist countries or independent states . Following the collapse of the USSR the US imperialists turned their attention to the DPRK and planned to stifle it by military means . In 1991 the US imperialists and their satellite states attacked Iraq and in 1992 , the US and other NATO countries invaded the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina .
On the Korean peninsula itself the situation was extremely tense.The south Korean puppets started raving about launching a commando attack on the DPRK's nuclear facilities at Nyongbyon .
Thus comrade KIM JONG IL assumed a very heavy responsibility for leading the defence of the independence of the DPRK and not only defending the independence of the DPRK but the whole destiny of world socialism which rested on the bayonets of the Korean People's Army . Comrade KIM JONG IL commanding the Korean People's Army built it up to be strong in both weaponry and ideology . He ensured that it was an army of the leader and an army of the Party .
In March 1993 the US imperialists put intense pressure on the DPRK over the so-called 'nuclear issue' . The imperialists arrogantly demanded to inspect two non-nuclear bases of the DPRK which was a wanton violation of the DPRK's sovereignty . Under the leadership of comrade KIM JONG IL the DPRK took the decisive revolutionary step of declaring its withdrawal from the one-sided and imperialistic 'Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty , as the supreme commander of the Korean People's Army comrade KIM JONG IL put the Korean People's Army , the Worker-Peasant Red Guard and Red Young Guards onto semi-war alert ready to defend the Juche homeland . This move foxed the US imperialists who were then compelled to enter into negotiations with the DPRK and eventually conclude the DPRK-US Agreed Framework .
In 1994 the US imperialists infiltrated a spy helicopter into the sovereign territory of the DPRK .I vividly remember waking up one Saturday morning and turning on the radio. The BBC announcer said ' Anti-aircraft gunners in north Korea have shot down a US army helicopter ' . I felt elated and excited . I put on the music ' No Motherland Without You ' . The shooting down of the US helicopter was not only a great victory for the DPRK but for international communist movement and socialist forces which had been a period of retreat and confusion following the collapse of the USSR . The Americans had to issue an apology to People's Korea before they released the surviving pilot . Comrade KIM JONG IL had proved that the socialist countries would not be pushed around by the US imperialists.
The south Korean puppets staged many provocations along the Military Demarcation Line and also the extremely tense West Sea region where they tried to impose the illegal and unilateral 'Northern Limit Line '. The navy of the Korean People's Army won brilliant victories in the West Sea in 1999 and 2002.
In October 2006 the DPRK tested its first nuclear device . This was a nuclear thunderbolt of Songun and Juche thrown against the imperialists. Korea once a country with no armed forces to speak of became a proud member of the nuclear club. This was a proud achievement of comrade KIM JONG IL's leadership .
During the 24 years of his command of the Korean People's Army comrade KIM JONG IL proved to be an ever-victorious iron-willed brilliant Supreme Commander.
