60 years ago on the 25th of August 1960 a most remarkable and significant event happened , the Songun revolutionary leadership began . August 25th is now celebrated by People's Korea and by Juche Idea and Songun idea followers as the Day of Songun. The Songun revolutionary leadership began when a young comrade KIM JONG IL visited the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su no 105th Tank Division of the Korean People's Army which is an army unit steeped in revolutionary history : it was the first KPA unit to enter Seoul in June 1950 during the Fatherland Liberation War and was named after the anti-Japanese guerrilla commander Ryu Kyong Su.
The Songun revolutionary leadership began at a time when the People's Korea faced intense pressure from the US imperialists who were stepping up their provocations against the country . It was only seven years after the end of the Fatherland Liberation War (Korean War ) but the US had never given up its dream of invading the DPRK . At the same time modern revisionism had made its appearance on the scene , it was beginning to have a negative effect on the international communist movement . The DPRK through its experience in the Fatherland Liberation War and the Anti-Japanese armed struggle that it could not depend on others for military assistance , this lesson was further reinforced by the emergence of modern revisionism which capitulated to imperialism under the plea of ' peaceful co-existence ' and cut down their support for socialist countries and national liberation movements
At the unit comrade KIM JONG IL gave a talk titled "' Let Us Defend with our very lives the Party Central Committee headed by the respected comrade KIM IL SUNG ' . This slogan should be held higher by the People's Army " in which he said ' To Defend the Party and the leader to death is a decisive guarantee for achieving victory in our revolution ". This was very important as the modern revisionists had defamed the leader of the revolution crying and bleating about 'personality cults' and also denied the leading role of the Party.
The Songun revolutionary leadership meant that the idea of self-reliance in national defence was carried out thoroughly . The self-defence power of People's Korea increased remarkably . The DPRK was able to inflict defeats on the US in the ongoing confrontation which had continued after the end of the Fatherland Liberation War . For example in 1968 the DPRK captured the US armed spy ship ' Pueblo ' and a year later the ECI21 spy ship was brought by fighter aircraft of the KPA Air Force . Later when the US imperialists went wild to stifle the DPRK during the first and second 'nuclear crises ' , the DPRK stood its ground and faced them down . On the 9th of October 2006 the DPRK carried out its first ever nuclear test and joined the club of nuclear powers .Thus the DPRK now stood on an equal playing field with other countries.
The Songun revolutionary leadership not only strengthened the Korean People's Army in terms of weaponry and technique but in terms of ideology and spiritual power . The monolithic ideological system of the party was established in the KPA . Bureaucratic warlord-ism was eliminated from the KPA as well as modern revisionism , bourgeois ideas and all forms of opportunism . The ideology of the KPA was so strong that when 2 KPA soldiers who were out fishing accidentally drifted into south Korea and were captured by the south Korean side , they refused to covert even though they were offered money , cars , watches , houses and even women , but instead they demanded to be sent back to the DPRK .
The traditional army-people leadership has flourished and become stronger under the Songun revolutionary leadership . The KPA is a true army of the people . It helps the people and works with them . Many structures such as the West Sea Barrage have been constructed by soldier builders of the KPA or with their participation. When I visited the DPRK in 1996 the Anbyon Power Station had just been completed by soldier builders of the KPA . Today the army-people unity continues with KPA soldiers assisting in the rehabilitation of flood damaged areas.
The several decades of Songun revolutionary leadership laid a solid foundation for the DPRK to advance to new heights of socialist construction and national defence , today it is carried forward by respected Marshal KIM JONG UN.
