In history the 20th century is recorded as a new era when socialism, which mankind had longed for as their ideal for centuries, was translated into reality.

However, the world socialist movement suffered serious setbacks in the late 20th century.

In the wake of the collapse of socialism in several East European countries in succession, the Soviet Union which had existed for seven decades since its birth as the first socialist state on this planet collapsed. Many people who aspired to and strongly desired socialism were thrown into ideological confusion, vacillation and despondency. Imperialists and renegades of socialism clamoured about the “end” of socialism.

At this juncture, a large number of foreigners and figures from different continents and regions across the world visited Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in the run-up to the 80th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung in April 1992.

Representatives of the Communist and Workers’ parties and other progressive political parties from many countries witnessed the achievements made by the Workers’ Party of Korea and the Korean people in their socialist construction, received instructions from the President and expressed their determination to defend and advance socialism. They discussed the ways for having bilateral and multilateral talks, defending the socialist cause and reconstructing afresh the socialist movement. Thus, the Pyongyang Declaration, titled, Let Us Defend and Advance the Cause of Socialism, was adopted and made public on April 20, 1992.

The gist of the declaration was to resolutely fight for reconstructing the socialist movement and defend the socialist principles.

The declaration, signed by leaders and delegates of 70 political parties from several countries around the world, pointed out that socialism is the society which represents the future of mankind and the socialist cause will emerge victorious without fail for its truthfulness and validity. It appealed to the progressive political parties and peoples throughout the world to fight to the end to carve out the future of mankind with a firm faith in the socialist cause.

The Pyongyang Declaration gave a strong impetus to the revival of the world socialist movement and marked a milestone in advancing it along a new track, settling the state of confusion in the socialist movement and inspired confidence and courage in the progressive political parties and figures across the world. By now, more than 310 political parties around the world have signed the declaration.

Many people around the world grew strongly desirous of socialism again, and the socialist movement regained its vigor. This clearly showed the absurdity of the sophistry of the “end” of socialism trumpeted by the imperialists and their mouthpieces, and proved that socialism is a science and truth and that it is a law of history that socialism, the ideal of mankind, will emerge victorious.

The stark reality of the DPRK, which defends socialism centred on the masses of the people, serves as a beacon of hope for many people across the world aspiring to socialism.

The working masses in this country bring into full bloom their independent demands and creative talents as masters of the state and society and everything in this society serves them. They do not know even the words the rich getting ever richer and the poor getting ever poorer, and they all lead an equally worthwhile life. Thanks to the benefits of free medical care and free compulsory education systems, they form a large harmonious family, helping and leading one another forward and no one is unemployed in the country. Herein lies the peculiarity of the Korean-style socialism.

The orientation of the development of history can never be changed as long as the masses of the people aspiring to independence exist; socialism is a science and truth of history.
