Commentary on the 1st anniversary of the DPRK-US summit-by Dr Dermot Hudson

Tomorrow , June 12th , is the anniversary of the historic DPRK-US Summit between DPRK supreme leader respected Marshal KIM JONG UN and US president Donald J Trump , the first ever meeting between a ruling US president and a DPRK supreme leader. The summit was a surprise to many as most people thought that a war between the US and DPRK was only a matter of time , a question of when and not if . However the summit went ahead giving the hope of a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula , in the Asia-Pacific region and the world .
However the DPRK-US joint statement runs the risk of becoming a mere piece of paper , a historical footnote because the US has failed to implement its side of the joint statement . The US has continued with the hostile policy towards the DPRK in a number of ways such maintaining and increasing sanctions on the DPRK , seizing the DPRK cargo ship the "WIse Honest " , carrying rebranded military exercises with south Korea against the DPRK , being implicated in an act of terrorism against the DPRK embassy in Madrid and the constant demonization of the DPRK in the US media and media in other countries that it controls , has been kept .
Denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula not the one sided unilateral denuclearisation of the DPRK as demanded by the US . It should be remembered that is the US that is the author of the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula . In violation of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement , the US shipped nuclear weapons into south Korea in 1957 and at one point had 1,700 nuclear weapons in south Korea. Some US nuclear weapons remain in south Korea as the withdrawal of US nuclear weapons in south Korea has never been independently verified. Denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula means that the US should withdraw all its weapons in and around the Korean peninsula and completely and irreversibly end its nuclear threat to the DPRK , it is as simple as that . The DPRK will never the so-called “Libyan solution' touted by some in the US . In Libya Col Gadhafi scrapped Libya's very basic and infant nuclear programme and even handed over the equipment to the US . Seven years later the Colonel was dead , killed by a CIA lynch mob after the US and others had orchestrated regime change in Libya . The DPRK also will not make the mistakes of some former socialist countries which are although big and powerful caved into imperialism on several occasions and allowed socialism to collapse without even a shot being fired in its defence.
The DPRK is to be congratulated for not walking into the trap set by the US namely for it to lay down its weapons first . This is due to the wisdom of respected Marshal KIM JONG UN. Juche Korea under the leadership of respected Marshal KIM JONG UN should also be congratulated for standing firm and maintaining principles . The US hoped to trick the DPRK into dismantling its socialist system as it had done so with some other socialist countries or to push the DPRK down the route of
"reform" and "opening up " . The DPRK upheld revolutionary principles in its negotiations with the US.
For a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula the US must completely and irreversibly scrap its hostile policy towards the DPRK. UK KFA will play its part in campaigning for the US to end the hostile policy towards the DPRK . With this aim in mind we are picketing the US Embassy on the 22nd of June .
