Dr. Dermot Hudson's book Return to the Land of Juche Korea (April 2024) provides a detailed account of his recent trip to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Dermot Hudson, a respected expert on the DPRK, once again offers readers an accurate and unfiltered view of the reality of this country, free from the influences of Western media.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the analysis of the economic stability of the DPRK following a four-year border closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The author emphasizes that despite this situation, the country’s progress has not been halted, thanks to its self-sufficient economy built according to the principles of Juche ideology. Moreover, he notes that, for instance, the development of housing policy not only maintained a high level but actually accelerated compared to the state before the pandemic. This serves as a testament to the effectiveness of a centrally planned socialist economy.

The author also addresses daily life in the DPRK, highlighting the stability of prices in stores, including the hotel Koryo shop. The fact that prices remained unchanged is evidence of the country’s good economic condition. This observation is particularly significant given the economic difficulties and inflation faced by capitalist countries.

A particularly important section features the author speaking with a resident of the DPRK about a false article from NK News suggesting that bananas in the country cost $250. The citizen reacts to such absurd claims with laughter, exposing the baselessness of such reports. This illustrates the deliberate misinformation that circulates about the country on the internet and in the media, and Dr. Hudson, as always, seeks to portray the true image of life in Korea.

It is also worth noting the numerous descriptions of Korean hospitality that accompany the entire book. The author repeatedly emphasizes the warmth and kindness with which he was received during his visit.

Return to the Land of Juche Korea is a splendid read for those who want to learn about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea after a four-year pandemic hiatus.
