DPRK Delegation Head Makes Speech at Ministerial Meeting of Coordinating Bureau of NAM

Pyongyang, July 24 (KCNA) -- The head of the delegation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea made a speech at the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Caracas, Venezuela on July 20 and 21.

He said that despite continued efforts of the NAM countries, the imperialists are becoming more undisguised than ever before in arbitrarily trampling over the sovereignty of other countries with complete disregard of the UN Charter and international law in the international arena.

He went on:

In many countries, humanitarian disasters are occurring one after another accompanied by serious political crisis, military conflicts, aggravated disputes and refugee influx, and the main victims of these disasters are none other than many of the NAM countries.

The prevailing reality demands that the NAM decisively enhance its position and role as a political force representing developing countries.

When the member states that occupy overwhelming majority of the UN membership further intensify collective action, the leading role of the NAM can be enhanced in safeguarding peace and security of the world.

In order to defend the collective interests of the member states and implement the principles of impartiality and equality at the UN, it is important for the NAM member states which are the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council to further enhance their role.

If those member states actively engage themselves in representing the interests of the NAM, they can prevail over all sorts of maneuvers of the West committed against developing countries and thereby make contributions to enabling the UN to fulfill its mission of preserving world peace and security in good faith.

The DPRK as a member state of the NAM has been making consistent efforts to develop and strengthen the NAM in conformity with its founding purposes and the principles of activities.

Despite the continuing challenges of the hostile forces attempting to block the road ahead of us, the DPRK government remains firm and unshakable in its will to establish a lasting and durable peace mechanism on the Korean peninsula, open up a new phase of prosperity by its own efforts and realize the ideal and objectives for a powerful country.

The DPRK government will actively support and encourage the NAM member states in their efforts to hold fast to the ideal of independence against imperialism and peace against war and to defend sovereignty.

The DPRK government will in the future, too, make every possible effort for the strengthening and development of the NAM in accordance with its foreign policy ideals of independence, peace and friendship. -0-
