Special Article by ASSPUK and JISGE on the 20th anniversary of the assumption of the post of Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army by the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il
On December 24th it will be 20 years since the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il was elected as Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army at the 19th plenary meeting of the 6th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea .Thus he became the head of the invincible revolutionary armed forces of Juche Korea, a post which carried high responsibility , indeed a responsibility that cannot be measured or estimated because of the DPRK's central role in the struggle to defend socialism. The DPRK on the frontline of the struggle between socialism and imperialism . With the frustation of socialism in the USSR the DPRK became the standard bearer of world socialism. Thus commanding the armed forces of the DPRK meant that not only did comrade Kim Jong Il assume the responsibility for the defence of socialist Korea but for the defence of socialism in the world and anti-imperialist independence.
Kim Jong Il's election as KPA supreme commander came at at time of world turmoil . Only a few weeks earlier that red flag had been lowered over the Kremlin. The US imperialists and their satellite states had concluded the 1st Iraq war with the aim of stifling the anti-imperialist forces in the middle east. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had been broken up into separate states in conflict with each other and all over the world the imperialists were increasing their intervention and interference. US chief executive Bush spoke of a "New World Order" . In Korea the south Korean puppets egged on by the US imperialists were talking wildly of making preemptive strikes on the DPRK including commando raids on the DPRK's nuclear facilities (this was a copy of the aggressive action of the Israeli zionists in destroying an Iraqi nuclear reactor) , later the US imperialists were to create the so -called 'nuclear crisis' in Korea.
The election of the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il as supreme commander of the Korean People's Army was a major landmark indeed a turning point in the DPRK's Songun revolution. Songun means giving priority to the military, the first line of defence of the revolution. The dear leader comrade Kim Jong Il was well versed in military affairs and had played an behind the scenes role during incidents such as the "Pueblo" affair and the Panmunjom incident of 1976 . This showed his unique art of command ..Indeed he emerged as a pre eminent general and a gifted military strategist . Comrade Kim Jong Il had began his Songun revolutionary leadership on the 25th of August 1960 when he visited the Seoul Ryu Kyong Su no 105 Tank Division . Thus the election of comrade Kim Jong Il as Supreme Commander of the KPA was the logical outcome of just over 3 decades of involvement in military affairs. It also placed at the one of the top positions of state. Since 1980 he had been the secretary of organisation of the CC of the WPK and a member of the Political bureau of the WPK having being acclaimed as successor to the great leader comrade Kim Il Sung.
As mentioned above the US imperialists in the 1990s greatly increased their hostile moves against the DPRK. Soon they made the International Atomic Energy Agency take it side against the DPRK which unjustly demanded that the DPRK accept inspection of two non nuclear military sites . At the same the US imperialists and south Korean puppets staged a massive war exercise "Team Spirit -93" . Supreme Commander comrade Kim Jong Il responded by putting the Korean People's Army on to a semi-war state ready to smash the provocations of the US imperialists and got the DPRK to declare its intention to withdraw from the unjust "Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty". This was a thunderbolt hit the US imperialists hard and compelled them to enter into negotiation with the DPRK..
The KPA under the command of supreme commander comrade Kim Jong Il stoutly defended socialist Korea against all kinds of provocations by the US imperialists and south Korean puppets . I myself remember switching on the radio one day in December 1994 and hearing the news that a KPA A A gunner had shot down a US army helicopter which had intruded into DPRK airspace. Excited I played the tune "No Motherland Without You ". Later in March 2003 figher planes of the KPA air force chased off intruding US planes.
In order to cope with the massive pressure of the US imperialists and indeed other imperialist powers to stifle Korean-style socialism the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il developed in depth Songun politics the concrete embodiment of the Songun idea which had been intitated by the great leader comrade Kim Il Sung . Songun is based on the simple precept that that revolution and independence are advanced by the force of arms. Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il put this into practice. He visited the Takabasol army post on the 1st of January 1995 . He declared that the DPRK was at the crossroads , that they could either live under independent socialism or become colonial slaves of the imperialists (colonial slavery had become the lot of many countries under the so-called New World Order of Bush. Clinton and Blair) in order to do this the DPRK must travel the road of Songun. As comrade Kim Jong Il explained
"The showdown between us and imperialism is a confrontation of power; the anti-imperialist military front constituted me major front line, the first lifeline of our revolution, on which the destiny of the country, the nation and socialism would be decided. We had to strengthen and rely on the People’s Army by concentrating our efforts on military affairs. In this way we were able to save the destiny of the country and the nation, and lead the revolution and construction to victory. This is the reason why we say the army means the Party, the State and the people. Had we neglected military affairs and failed to strengthen the army, we might have perished already, far from conducting the revolution and construction."
Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il built up the KPA as the central force of the Korean revolution . He gave guidance tirelessly to many KPA units including visiting many frontline units. He visited Panmunjom on the 24th of November 1996 and also climbed the steep Chol pass. On one occasion he even pushed his own staff car up hill. His guidance was ceaseless,often up 200 times a year.
In the early years of the 21st century instead of learning from history the Bush clique of US imperialism stepped up moves to stifle and crush Korean-style socialism slandering the DPRK as part of an alleged "axis of evil " and declared the DPRK a target of a pre emptive nuclear strike. Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il called the bluff of the US imperialists by getting the DPRK to develop its own independent nuclear deterrent. The DPRK came to have its own nuclear device made with 100% DPRK resources and technology, without outside help. The first nuclear test of the DPRK on the 9th of October 2006 shook US imperialism and its satellite states. Thus the DPRK became a nuclear power.
In the 1900s the independence of Korea had been lost not just because of factional strife and flunkeyism but because the feudal rulers of Korea had failed to develop a defence industry so that Korea only had crude rifles to defend itself but now as a result of the patient devotion to Juche defence up building by the great leader comrade Kim Il Sung which was continued and enhanced by the Songun revolutionary leadership of the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il the DPRK now possess not only nukes but missiles, tanks, long range guns, ships and other ultra modern defence equipment. These are weapons of justice which Juche Korea can defend itself with. Not only is the KPA strong in weapons but it adheres to the Juche-orientated concept of warfare which stipulates that war is not decided by weapons alone but by those who hold those weapons. Thus the KPA is strong in ideology . Leader Kim Jong Il ensured that the line of every KPA soldier being a match for a hundred enemy soldiers which was started by the great leader comrade Kim Il Sung, was fully continued.
The Lee Myung Bak fascist puppet clique of south Korea spurred by their masters the US imperialists have committed many intolerable provocations against the DPRK.. In November 2010 they staged the Yongphyong incident. They acted like delinquent children only to be punished by the guns of the KPA under the command of the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il.
It is thanks to the wise leadership of Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il that the outbreak of war on the Korean peninsula has been prevented. Not only only has world peace been defended but the front line of socialism in the world has held firm thanks to the KPA under the command of Supreme Commander comrade Kim Jong Il, the brilliant commander of Songun and ever-victorious general of Mt Paetku.
