It is seventy years since the Korean People's Army ,commanded by the great leader generalissimo
KIM IL SUNG , an ever-victorious iron-willed brilliant commander and gifted military strategist , liberated Taejon City in south Korea after wining a decisive battle with US troops and south Korean puppet troops . The Taejon liberation battle has great significance for me , firstly because of the date 20th of July 1950 , 20th of July is my birthday and I was born 11 years after the battle of Taejon , secondly , because I remember on one of my earlier visits to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea seeing boots and generals pips belonging to US general Dean, who was captured by the Korean People's Army , in the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum . However the fact that the battle of Taejon was a massive and crushing defeat for the US army unprecedented in history .
The south Korean puppets and US imperialists had provoked the Fatherland Liberation War on the 25th of June 1950 when the south Korean puppet armed forces intruded into the DPRK by 1 to 2 kilometres after shelling the front-line areas of the DPRK for a few days previously . The odds were stacked against the young People's Korea which had a population of just under half of that of south Korea. The south Korean puppets had bragged that they would 'take breakfast at Haeiu , lunch in Pyongyang and supper in Sinuiju '.
However it turned into a rout for the south Korean puppet army which proved itself to be totally useless in the face of the heroic Korean People's Army ( KPA)commanded by Generalissimo KIM IL SUNG . The KPA based on Juche and self-reliance went through south Korea like a dose of salts . Seoul , the capital of the hated and decaying south Korean puppet regime , was liberated on the 28th of June , the third day of the war . The KPA advanced rapidly through south Korea , the south Korean puppet army which was riven by internal contradictions , virtually collapsed . A story was related to me once by a general secretary of a communist party in the UK who met a former British soldier in Korea . He said that when he was in Korea he never once saw a south Korean soldier only British , American and Turkish troops . The Yankees panicked realizing that soon they would lose south Korea entirely . They rushed the US 24th division headed by General Dean to the Korean peninsula . Now Dean was an experienced and distinguished American general . During the Second World War Dean had commanded the US troops in Europe fighting battles in France , Germany and Austria . Dean had been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Legion of Merit. The US 24th division was said to be in 'invincible division ' of the US army and had fought the Japanese in the Philippines during the Second World War.It was known as the 'Taro Division ' , meaning victorious division.
Following the rout and virtual collapse of the south Korean puppet regime , the south Korean puppets named Taejon as their temporary capital and Dean made Taejon the headquarters of the US 24th division . It was assumed by the arrogant Yankee imperialists that the KPA would be no match for the US 24th division which was a mechanized infantry division supported by tanks and artillery . Moreover the US air force had gone into action from day one in the Korean War so the US troops had air support .
Generalissimo KIM IL SUNG applied the Juche-based military tactics that he had developed in the anti-Japanese armed struggle. In those days(July 1950) the KPA faced the US imperialists and south Korean puppets He ordered the KPA units to encircle the US army division by making sharp detours . The Americans did not expect the KPA to move so fast but they did . The KPA troops moved like lighting.. As the enemy put emphasis on the front and kept the southeastern area open, Generalissimo KIM IL SUNG saw to it that the KPA units, which had advanced to the southwestern area, manoeuvred back, some to the area southeast of Taejon to cut off the retreat of the enemy, thus forming a circle surrounding the city.
On the morning of the 20th of July Taejon was liberated . General Dean the commander of the
24th division was captured ,trying to escape, by a young soldier of the Korean People's Army . Dean had in the second world war commanded US troops which took 30,000 prisoner but now Dean himself had ended up being taken prisoner . The KPA under Generalissimo KIM IL SUNG had turned the tables on the Yankee imperialists .
The KPA had killed or captured 24 228 enemy troops, took away 20 080 stands of small arms, destroyed or captured 150-odd cannons, 49 tanks and some 1 010 armoured cars and motorcars and shot down or destroyed 32 planes. Some people invoking 'proletarian internationalism' like to downplay the role of the Korean People's Army under the command of the great leader Generalissimo KIM IL SUNG and elevated the role of internationalist assistance to People's Korea saying that it was decisive in the victory of the Korean people . However the KPA had faced the US 24th Division all on its own .It was a great victory for the Juche-based tactics of generalissimo KIM IL SUNG , the Songun idea and self-reliance .
Today if you are lucky enough visit People's Korea you can visit the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum and see the amazing Taejon Liberation Battle giant diorama( which itself is an astonishing creation) . The stage actually rotates and there are sound effects . You get a real feel of the massive defeat of the US imperialists 70 years ago in the south Korean city of Taejon.
The exploits performed by generalissimo KIM IL SUNG and the Korean People's Army in liberating Taejon will shine forever. If the US ever starts another war on the Korean peninsula they will suffer a defeat even greater than at Taejon in 1950.
