On the 24th of December it will 28 years since the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL was appointed as supreme commander of the Korean Peoples Army at the 19th plenary meeting of the 6th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea which was held on the 24th of of December 1991. This was at a crucial time as socialism had been frustrated in a number of countries owing to the treachery and intrigue of the modern revisionists , therefore the DPRK faced US imperialism on its own and the US imperialists stepped up their efforts to stifle the DPRK by force thus the role of Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army carried a very great responsibly. Of course comrade KIM JONG IL had for many years guided the KPA, the invincible revolutionary armed forces and proved himself to a very able and skillful commander
History knows of many great generals and commanders such as Field Marshal Montgomery in my own country but comrade KIM JONG IL was truly unique and distinguished in that he was not only well versed in military tactics and the art of command but was a supreme commander who was at one with his troops. In capitalist countries which are torn apart by social conflict , the relationship between superiors and subordinates is basically a hostile one . I remember my father speaking with great scorn of Field Marshal Montgomery who was regarded as a national hero but was hated by the ordinary soldiers . Generally in capitalist and feudal societies there have been great military commanders but such people have been at best one-dimensional figures as they were very skilled and proficient at military tactics but incapable of handling the human side of affairs .
Comrade KIM JONG IL had been leading the revolutionary armed forces of Juche Korea for some time before he became Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army in 1991 . Indeed he had began his Songun(army first) revolutionary leadership on the 25th of August 1960 . Comrade
KIM JONG IL carried forward the great ideas of the great leader President KIM IL SUNG on unity between the people and the army and unity between superiors and subordinates . President KIM IL SUNG had always said during the anti-Japanese armed struggle that the anti-Japanese guerrillas cannot live apart from the people , that to do so would be like a fish living out of water .Comrade KIM JONG IL always shared life with the soldiers . In 1962 he participated in military camping at Oun-dong near Pyongyang for some 40 days.
Throughout his leadership of the revolutionary armed forces comrade KIM JONG IL always went to army units regardless of how far they were from Pyongyang and in all weathers ,sun , rain or snow He even climbed the steep Chol Pass , pushing his own car to visit a KPA unit. He was not a commander who run the army from his desk or simply gave orders from the rear from the front but actually visited frontline units that were face to face with the US imperialists ,for example his visit to Panmunjom in November 1996,Between July 1994 and 2000 comrade KIM JONG IL inspected 275 KPA units .
Comrade KIM JONG IL was deeply concerned about the living conditions of the soldiers . In 1996 he said "I am going to send high-quality fur coats to the People’s Army soldiers. If soldiers whose duties involve lying flat even on frozen ground are supplied with them, they will be very pleased". When I visited the Korean Revolution Museum in 2008 I saw exhibited the hand creams that comrade
KIM JONG IL had sent to KPA women soldiers to prevent their hands being damaged by the wind and cold .
Looking at the history of the revolutionary activities of comrade KIM JONG IL as Supreme Commander of the KPA we can conclude that he was a true People's Supreme Commander.
