Recently , the 8th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), which was held in early January 2021 , adopted the slogans ‘ Believing in the People as in heaven ‘ ‘ Single-hearted unity ‘ and ‘self -reliance . The great leader comrade KIM JONG IL who was born 79 years ago on the 16th of February 1942 was associated with all three slogans and by adopting the slogans the WPK is carrying forward the ideas and behests of comrade KIM JONG IL . So far we have written about the people-centred policies of comrade KIM JONG IL and also about self-reliance and the independent national economy . This short article will look at comrade KIM JONG IL’s teachings about single-hearted unity.
Without a doubt single-hearted unity is the DPRK’s secret weapon (along with self-reliance ) and a source of unfathomable strength .
As comrade KIM JONG IL said “ “The single-hearted unity of the leader, the party and the masses is a source of boundless strength that cannot be shattered even by a nuclear bomb”. I think this eloquently sums up the DPRK’s single hearted unity . The single-hearted unity of the DPRK in which the leader , party and masses form a single, integral , harmonious whole is something that the imperialists do not understand , they see it as something forced and unnatural . At the same time the imperialists fear and dread the single hearted unity of People’s Korea.
Without a doubt single-hearted unity is a distinctive feature of Juche-based , Korean style socialism . Capitalist and imperialist countries are rent with severe internal contradictions and conflicts between classes , social strata and different ethnic groups break out frequently . There are riots , disorder and strikes in capitalist countries . I remember when I was living in Woolwich in 2011 there were riots and buildings were burnt down and destroyed . This would be unthinkable in People’s Korea . Recently , there was disorder in the US when supporters of Donald Trump rejected the election result and attacked the building of the US Congress and Senate . At the same time the DPRK was able to hold successfully , in an atmosphere of single hearted unity , the 8th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea . Such a stark contrast between single-hearted unity in People’s Korea and decadent , decaying monopoly capitalism in the USA !.In the DPRK there are no antagonistic classes as exploiting systems such as feudalism and capitalism have been eliminated. The means of production are socially owned and everyone has a stake in society therefore there is no basis for social and class antagonism.
The single -hearted unity of the DPRK can be likened to a tree that was planted by the great leader President KIM IL SUNG that was carefully tended and nurtured by the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL. It is a mighty and strong tree that withstood the winds and storms of anti-socialism and revisionism.
It was comrade KIM JONG IL who worked to establish the monolithic ideological system of Juche and built single-hearted unity throughout society .After the 15th Plenary Meeting of the Fourth Party Central Committee was held from May 4 to 8, 1967 , the establishment of the monolithic ideological system of Juche became the order of the day as comrade KIM JONG IL said ‘The Party's monolithic ideological system is, in other words, the leader's ideological system and system of guidance. In our Party there can only be the leader 's revolutionary idea and guidance. Without them the existence of our Party is inconceivable. The revolutionary idea of the great leader is the eternal guiding ideology of our Party and revolution. Thanks to the wise guidance of the leader our people could not only victoriously fight their way across tens of thousands of ri in the bloody war against the Japanese imperialists, and defeat the US imperialist aggressors, in the three-year-long Fatherland Liberation War, but also succeed in the postwar reconstruction and socialist revolution and achieve miraculous successes in the building of socialism, to the admiration of the people throughout the world.
We must improve the education on Party policy, the revolutionary traditions and socialist patriotism of Party members and the working people. The main emphasis in the education need s to be on the establishment of the Party' s monolithic ideological system”
Later on In his seminal work "ON THE JUCHE IDEA " published in March 1982 Comrade KIM JONG IL defined the single hearted unity of society as the driving force, the locomotive force in socialist society he wrote that ". If powerful internal political forces are to be developed, it is imperative to strengthen the party, the leading revolutionary force, and achieve the unity and solidarity of the entire population based on the worker-peasant alliance with the working class at its core. What is most important here is to rally all the people closely around the party and the leader. When the party and the people are solidly united into a single political force, they will be able to display boundless strength and emerge victorious in the revolution and construction".This made a great contribution to theories on socialist construction and is a great guideline for building socialism.
When socialism was frustrated in some countries owing to the treachery of the modern revisionists and intrigue of the imperialists , comrade KIM JONG IL made sure that the DPRK upheld the red flag of socialism and consolidated single -hearted unity . He pointed out in his work ‘ Our Socialism Centred Upon the Popular Masses Shall Not Perish ( May 1991 ) that ‘Socialism in our country is invincible socialism based on the single-hearted unity of the leader, the Party and the masses. The driving force of a socialist society is the popular masses themselves. But only when the popular masses are closely united behind the Party and the leader can they play their role as the independent driving force of the revolution and successfully carry out socialist construction.” , moreover he further explained that
“The leader is the centre of unity and cohesion which ensures that the popular masses become politically conscious and organize themselves so that they are united into a political force, and he is the centre of leadership at the head of the revolutionary struggle of the popular masses, leading it to victory with his scientific theory and strategy and tactics”
This is what made the DPRK different from the former revisionist led socialist countries . they failed to unite their people around the party and leader , instead they preached liberalism . The results are too well known.
Comrade KIM JONG IL paid great attention to building up the single -hearted unity of the DPRK . He saw to it that many conferences were organised for different sections of society . He stressed army-people unity as well . Many impressive mass parades and demonstrations were held . It was under comrade KIM JONG IL’s leadership that the mass game ‘ Arirang ‘ was developed . This was more than a mass game , it was a powerful and unique demonstration of single -hearted unity that was incredible to watch . Watching the ‘Arirang ‘ mass game in 2002 I was amazed , it was like nothing I had seen before in my life . It was the fruition of the guidance and leadership of comrade KIM JONG IL .
So as we mark the Day of the Shining Star , the 79th anniversary of the birth of the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL , I remember his great achievements in building up single-hearted unity based on Juche in the DPRK .
