There has been a general clamour in the imperialist media about sanctions against the DPRK for its recent nuclear test. Already the EU has slapped a massive sanctions package on the DPRK and a US congress resolution was passed calling for "additional sanctions" against the DPRK . The UN Security Council a marionette of US imperialism may also impose some sanctions on the DPRK on top of the draconian sanctions imposed on the DPRK on the 22nd of January.
However no amount of sanctions can break the will of the people of the DPRK united around the dear respected leader Marshal Kim Jong Un, Although they are a grave affront and an insult to the dignity of the DPRK they cannot affect the DPRK's economy,
Consider the following facts. The DPRK has been under a virtually continuous US blockade since 1950 . However the economy of the DPRK grew 431 times in terms of industrial output value and 65 times in national income between 1946-1984 ! This is an extremely high rate of growth. Two Western economists Brun and Hersh in their book "Socialist Korea a Case Study in comparative economic development" quoted an economic expert as stating that the DPRK's annual average economic growth rate between 1954 and 1970 was 23.5 % . Probably the highest growth rate in the world and a genuine Korean economic miracle(by the way the term Korean economic miracle was actually used by the emenient Cambridge economist Professor Joan V Robinson in 1964 to describe the DPRK economy). All these was done under conditions of sanctions and blockade by the US and other countries. Moreover it was entirely by the DPRK's own efforts not by 'aid' from the imperialist countries and certainly not favourable trade terms.
At at time when the Western countries had enforced a virtually total sanctions regime and blockade in the late 1950s the DPRK economy grew at a rate of 36.6% per annum between 1957 -1960 . In 1957 its rate of growth hit 44% undoubtedly the highest in the world. When you think capitalist countries have a growth rate of only 1% or 2% per year.
The great leader President Kim Il Sung put forward the line of building an independent national economy as early as the 1940s. In the 1950s the modern revisionists and great power chauvinists tried to put pressure on the DPRK to join the CMEA but it refused to do so maintaining the line of economic independence. The great leader President Kim Il Sung defined the independent national economy as follows
"building an independent national economy means building a diversified economy equipping it with up-to date technology and creating our solid bases of raw materials, thereby building up an all embracing economic system in which every branch is structurally interrelated so as to provide domestically most of the products of heavy and light industry and the agricultural produce needed to
make the country wealthy and powerful and to improve the people's living conditions"
(KIM IL SUNG Selected Works 2nd English edition vol 3 p 399).
Futhermore the great leader comrade Kim Jong Il in his work "ON THE JUCHE IDEA" wrote of the independent national economy as follows ;
"Building an independent national economy means building an economy which is free from dependence on others and which stands on its own feet, an economy which serves one's own people and develops on the strength of the resources of one's own country and by the
efforts of one's own people. Such an economy makes it possible to develop the productive forces
quickly by utilizing the nation's natural resources in a rational and integrated way, improve the
people's
living standard continuously, strengthen the material and technical foundations of
socialism, and increase the nation's political, economic and military power. It also ensures the exercise
of complete sovereignty and equality in political and economic affairs in international
relations and contributes to strengthening the world 's anti-imperialist, independent forces and
socialist forces. It is vital to build an independent national economy particularly in those countries which
were backward economically and technically because of imperialist domination and plunder in the
past. Only when they build an independent national economy in these countries, will they be able
to repel the new colonial policy of the imperialists, free themselves completely from their
domination and exploitation, wipe out national inequality, and vigorously advance on the road of
socialism."
Today the DPRK has an independent national economy which relies basically on its own raw materials and can produce most most of the machinery and equipment need for socialist construction. The DPRK can now produce anything from a wrist watch to a satellite. The imperialists were forced to concede that the Unha 3 rocket which carried the Kwangmysong 3-2 satellite was virtually 100% DPRK made.
One foreign expert estimated that the proportion of foreign trade in the Gross national product of the DPRK was 4.8 % whereas in south Korea it is 80%. This shows several things ; that the DPRK is the most economically independent country in the world, that south Korea is pathetically dependent on foreign trade , that the DPRK is free from the malady of globalisation and that it can withstand any sanctions because even there were total sanctions the other 95.2 % of the DPRK's economy would be unaffected.
Thus the DPRK will , under the leadership of dear respected Marshal Kim Jong Un, march on to final victory and build a thriving socialist country undeterred and unaffected by any sanctions of the crazy US imperialists !
