Juche era and Day of the Sun

On July 8, Juche 86 (1997), on the occasion of the third anniversary of the demise of President Kim Il Sung, the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the Central Military Commission of the WPK, the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Central People’s Committee of the DPRK and the Administration Council of the DPRK adopted the decision “On Glorifying the Revolutionary Life and Immortal Exploits of the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung for All Eternity.”

The decision instituted the Juche era with 1912 when Kim Il Sung was born as the first year, and his birthday (April 15), the greatest national holiday, as the Day of the Sun.

During the long period of his revolutionary activities, from when he embarked on the road of the revolution in his early teens to his eighties, the President performed immortal exploits for the country, the people, the times and the revolution.

In his early years, he opened a new era of Juche, the era of independence, by founding the immortal Juche idea and accomplished the historic cause of national liberation and firmly defended the country’s security and the nation’s dignity by organizing and leading to victory the anti-Japanese revolutionary war and the Fatherland Liberation War against the ferocious two imperialist powers, the US and Japan.

The President built a socialist power independent, self-sufficient and self-reliant in defence on this land by performing the cause of building the Party, the state and the army and successfully carrying out the two stages of social revolution–the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal democratic revolution and the socialist revolution–and several stages of socialist construction. And he resolutely safeguarded the Korean-style socialism centred on the people and fully demonstrated its might to the whole world by thwarting the imperialists and reactionaries’ attempts to isolate and stifle the country at every step.

Throughout the period of his revolutionary activities, he regarded “The people are God” as his motto and was on the road of devotion for the people, always sharing weal and woe with them, and devoted himself to the country’s prosperity and the people’s happiness till the last moment of his life.

The Juche era and the Day of the Sun just reflect the aspiration and desire of the Korean people and the world progressive peoples to add eternal brilliance to the President’s revolutionary career and exploits.

The Korean people are using the Juche era in mentioning years and hold various colourful political and cultural events to mark the Day of the Sun every year. April 15 and 16 were designated as national holidays and on the days all establishments, enterprises and units as well as families hoist the national flag.
