The publication of the July 4 Joint Statement of which kernel is the three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and the great national unity, was a landmark event that made the first breakthrough in the inter-Korean relations frozen for several decades and set up the signboard of the reunification.

The three principles are a program for Korea’s reunification that clarified the fundamentals to solve the reunification problem by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation.
The principle of independence is the key principle to be adhered to in the reunification movement, and when holding fast to it the Korean nation can settle the reunification problem in accordance with the independent demand and the main interests of the nation by its own efforts.
The principle of the peaceful reunification clarified the fundamental way to solve the reunification problem in keeping with the unanimous desire of all the fellow countrymen.
Reunifying the country by force of arms means a war and it renders benefit to none of the two sides in Korea.
The principle of the great national unity is an action program to rally the entire nation under the banner of the national reunification.
Indeed, the three principles for Korea’s reunification; independence, peaceful reunification and the great national unity, are the grand reunification program common to the nation, which accords with the nation’s will and aspiration for the reunification and the country’s reality, and an immortal banner for the cause of the national reunification.
The exploits of President Kim Il Sung who clarified the three principles, the reunification program common to the nation, with the outstanding reunification policy and ardent love for the country and the nation will shine forever along with the Korean history.
Korea’s reunification which was the lifelong desire of President Kim Il Sung is now brilliantly carried forward by leader Kim Jong Il, the great commander of Songun.
Kim Jong Il stipulated the three principles, the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo and the ten-point program for the great unity of the whole nation set forward by President Kim Il Sung, as the three charters of the national reunification and wisely leads all the fellow countrymen to the struggle for implementing them.
