There is a proverb which says “Ill got, ill spent”.

The proverb fits well the reality of the American society.

According to the recent data released by one of the U.S. study institutes, the U.S. has 102 federal prisons, 1,566 state prisons, 2,850 local detention centers, 1,510 reform schools, 186 detention centers for immigrants and 82 detention centers for natives as well as military prisons. And as many as 2 million prisoners are being detained in those places.

This shows that the U.S. ranks the top in the world in the number of prisoners, accounting for 25% of the world prisoners, although the population of the U.S. barely reaches 5% of the world population.

What appalls us is the fact that a prison market peculiar to the U.S. thrives on when the whole society falls into a breeding ground of crimes.

With the increase in the crime rate and in the demand for prisons, the U.S. building enterprises are reportedly bidding for contracts with the government on building new prisons, behind the scenes.

It is said that the number of violent crimes committed in the first quarter of this year is 71,017. This is tantamount to 72,936 – the number of crimes committed last year. This gives an unusual boom to the companies involved in correction and prison industry.

“Thriving prison market”; this is one of the numerous terms of the era heralding the end of the American society.
