Sixty Years of Struggle for Independence, Justice and Peace

This coming September 1 is the 60th founding anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) since it had put forward the noble ideals of independence, justice and peace, and declared its birth .

The NAM began its advance with 25 member states. It has now developed into a huge, influential political force involving 120 member states.

During the past 60 years, the NAM has made great contributions to safeguarding world peace and security, and protecting collective rights and interests of its member states while overcoming the challenges and difficulties of history.

The 60-year-long course of the Movement clearly demonstrates the validity and viability of the ideals and principles of the Movement which were adopted based on the ten principles of Bandung which include respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of States and enhancement of international cooperation.

The NAM has brilliantly recorded in its history the exploits of the great leaders who had made immortal contributions to the unity of world peoples and anti-war and peace-loving movement, the realization of South-South cooperation based on collective self-reliance, and to the struggle to establish a new international order.

President Kim Il Sung, in his early days, paid deep attention to the work of the NAM to build a new world, free and peaceful, free from all forms of domination, subordination, aggression and war, and made tireless efforts for its strengthening and development.

Chairman Kim Jong Il energetically led the work to elevate the role and authority of the NAM to a higher level in order to defend independence of the country and nation, and to realize global independence.

The ideas and cause of the great leaders to strengthen and develop the NAM are firmly carried forward by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, clarified that the NAM should take up its position and fulfil its role as befits the powerful anti-war, peace-loving force, and its member states should strive to accomplish the cause of global independence upholding the banner of independence against imperialism.

Times passed and one generation replaced another, but the Movement has yet to accomplish its historic mission to build a new world, just and peaceful, under the uplifted banner of independence against imperialism.

The independence of the NAM member states is being violated, and peace and stability of the world are under threats due to the infringement of sovereignty of independent countries, interference in internal affairs of States, and unilateral coercive measures which are openly perpetrated by the imperialist and dominating forces against those countries.

This reality presents us with a more pressing need than ever that the NAM member states stand resolute in their struggle to oppose the imperialists’ attempts at aggression and war.

The NAM member states should maintain its fundamental principle and ideal, reject the high-handedness and arbitrariness of the imperialists by concerted effort, and further intensify the struggle for defending sovereignty, rights to existence and development, and realizing the genuine international justice.

As reaffirmed in the Baku Summit and other summits, the NAM should invariably maintain independence and peace as the underlying ideals of the Movement, and give full support and encouragement to its member states in their efforts to safeguard the national sovereignty and to strengthen international cooperation.

The government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will, in the future too, discharge its responsibility and role in ensuring the genuine international justice, peace and security of the world in conformity with the missions and principles of the NAM under the ideals of independence, peace and friendship.
