For Development of Light Industry of Korean Style
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung, father of socialist Korea, performed the immortal exploits for the era and revolution, and for the country and people all his life. Among them is the exploit he made in developing the light industry of the country to improve the people's living standards.
The Ministry of Light Industry Established during the War
The Ministry of Light Industry is an important organ entrusted with the task to develop the light industry of the country and improve the people's living standards.
It was established in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1951 when the Fatherland Liberation War was in full swing to repulse the armed invasion of the US imperialists.
Kim Hyong Chun, Director of a Department of the Ministry of Light Industry, said that at that time Comrade Kim Il Sung had the light industrial goods exhibition organized and came out to the venue of the exhibition, and continued:
"At that time, on display at the venue of the light industrial goods exhibition were hundreds of kinds of goods produced at cooperative societies for production across the country.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung said the products were diverse in variety and they had been made well, and gave detailed instructions on stabilizing and improving the living of the people in difficult circumstances due to the war as soon as possible.
That day, he instructed in detail that the Ministry of Light Industry should be established that year and good preparations be made to rehabilitate and develop the light industry after the war."
Such instance could not be found in the history of other countries.
The establishment of the Ministry of Light Industry during the war was a crystallization of the matchless courage and pluck of Comrade Kim Il Sung who was sure about the victory in the war and that of his great ambition for improving the people's living.
To Build Our Own Firm Consumer Goods Production Bases
Comrade Kim Il Sung built our own firm consumer goods production bases to fully satisfy the growing demand of the people for the consumer goods.
In order to build our own firm consumer goods production bases he put forward an original line on developing the large-scale light industry under the central authority and the medium- and small-scale regional industry in parallel.
To this end, he saw to it that the large-scale light industry under the central authority was built into the backbone in the production of consumer goods.
Kim Hyong Chun, Director of a Department of the Ministry of Light Industry, said Comrade Kim Il Sung saw through the urgency of solving the clothing issue of the people after the war and put great efforts into rehabilitating and developing the textile industry as early as possible and continued:
"It was expected to take five years to rehabilitate the then Pyongyang Textile Mill after the war.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung called at the destroyed mill on the early morning of July 30, 1953, three days after the victory in the war. Indicating the direction of its reconstruction, he stressed the need to rehabilitate the mill only in two months' time, not in five years, and build it into a spinning mill, a weaving mill and a textile combine engaged even in dyeing and printing.
Under his leadership, it was developed into the largest and leading textile mill in the DPRK.
Not only this mill but also many other factories in the field of textile industry including the Kusong Textile Mill were built, rehabilitated or rebuilt on an expansion basis."
Comrade Kim Il Sung also built firm silk spinning and weaving industry bases.
In particular, he ensured that silk fabrics of beautiful patterns were produced with cocoons in the country.
He set forth tasks to be carried out in different sectors of light industry such as the foodstuff industry, daily necessities industry and footwear industry in a number of his works including the famous work "To Further Develop the Light Industry".
In order to build our own light industry bases he saw to it that medium- and small-scale regional industry factories were built extensively to bring about a great leap forward in the production of consumer goods.
At the plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea held in June 1958 he presented tasks to develop the production of consumer goods as an all-people movement by tapping out all the possible resources and build local industry factories in all cities and counties to carry them out.
He saw that those mountainous areas could make good use of mountains and local industry factories suited to the regional characteristics be built to make a substantial contribution to improving the people's living.
Uninterrupted Journey Based on His Love
Comrade Kim Il Sung visited light industry bases to improve the people's living so that they could produce a larger number of good-quality consumer goods.
He called at the Pyongyang Cornstarch Factory in September 1945 right after he accomplished the historic cause of national liberation by leading the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle to victory. Since then, he ceaselessly visited factories and enterprises in the sector of light industry across the country for field guidance.
He called at the Ryongbuk Foodstuff Factory in the city of Pyongyang on November 13, 1960 without having a rest on Sunday, Workteam Head Jang Myong Sim said and continued:
"Entering the bean curd production site of the factory that day, the fatherly leader Comrade Kim Il Sung talked about different methods of making bean curd one by one and taught how to improve its quality.
And he said that beans should be processed without any waste and provided to the people, and instructed the ways to make a comprehensive use of beans.
On the day, he is said to have taken measures to provide the capital citizens with tasty bean curd in all seasons before leaving the factory."
The love of Comrade Kim Il Sung can be felt at numerous light industry factories and enterprises across the country including the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Silk Mill, the Sinuiju Footwear Factory, the Hamhung Condiments Factory and the Pukchong Fruit Processing Factory.
Comrade Kim Il Sung devoted himself to developing the light industry of Korean style which will be conducive to the improvement of the people's living standards, and his exploits will shine for all ages.
