Lesson from General Sherman Should Not Be Forgotten

In 1866 USS General Sherman intruded into the waters of the feudal Joson dynasty, which was an outrageous act of military invasion committed by the US in accordance with its policy of Korea.

At that time, the US was attempting to secure its rights and interests in Korea so as to gain a foothold for colonizing the latter. It worked out a “plan for forcing Korea to open itself up,” a scheme designed to invade Korea, and pushed for its preparations, overtly revealing its aggressive ambition.

The US government dispatched the aggressor ship General Sherman to the west coastal waters of Korea to implement the plan in a military way.

In August 1866 General Sherman crept into the estuary of the Taedong River to force an unequal treaty upon Korea and open the way to invade it by threatening its feudal rulers with warship and cannons. The ship sailed on upstream along the river illegally conducting espionage activities and measuring the depth of the water. While on their voyage towards Pyongyang, the crewmen landed on nearby villages to rape local women and commit other atrocities. They impudently demanded that the Korean government allow them into the Walled City of Pyongyang and offer 1 000 som (one som equals about 144kg) of rice as well as lots of gold, silver and insam. When their demand was refused, they resorted to violent robbery and murder.

Outraged by the insolent acts of the aggressors, the people and soldiers in Pyongyang organized a death-defying corps, which sank the ship by setting fire to it. This was the first time that the US aggressors suffered an ignominious defeat in Korea.

The US went to war against the DPRK in the 1950s, but it had to kneel down before the heroic Korean people again and sign a surrender document.

Facts clearly show that if the US imperialists cling to their war drills against the DPRK and vicious moves to isolate and stifle it as they do now, oblivious of the lesson from General Sherman, they will inevitably be doomed to disgraceful defeat and death.

Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un Has Photo Session with Participants in 15th National Conference of Teachers

Pyongyang, September 5 (KCNA) -- Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, had a photo session with the participants in the 15th National Conference of Teachers on September 4.

Present there were Pak Thae Song, Kim Sung Du, Ju Chang Il, and other senior Party and government officials.

The participants in the conference were filled with great joy and excitement as they were blessed and encouraged by the Party Central Committee at the historic conference held amid the interest of the whole country and then came to be honored with the greatest privilege and happiness they will always remember.

When Comrade Kim Jong Un arrived at the venue of the photo session, they broke into stormy cheers of "Hurrah!"

Teachers presented bouquets of fragrant flowers to him on behalf of the conference participants and all other educators in the country.

All the participants expressed their deep thanks to the tender-hearted father, great mentor who gives the greatest respect and honor to the educators dedicating their whole life to the teaching which is directly related to the future of the country.

Acknowledging the enthusiastically cheering crowd, Comrade Kim Jong Un extended warm encouragement to the participants who glorified the conference as an occasion of new great success and leap forward to be specially recorded in the history of the development of Juche-oriented education.

Saying that the Korean revolution is winning victory after victory and our Party and state are demonstrating their absolute dignity and might since a huge army of genuine revolutionaries, ardent patriots and nice men of talent have reliably defended our idea and cause as a strong cornerstone and a solid castle wall, he highly praised again the devotion and feats of the educators dedicated to training such faithful pillars.

It is the plan and firm determination of our Party to make all the miracles and victories for national prosperity start from all the educational institutions across the country at present when socialist construction has entered a new stage of comprehensive development, he said, stressing that the significance of the conference lies in the declaration of the great expansion and intensification of the educational revolution in the new era.

When all the educators of the country become genuine revolutionaries with the communist character, true patriots who put their heart and soul into the efforts for national prosperity, and wise teachers with high qualifications and noble traits, the basis of the country will be stronger along with the training of the reliable rising generations and the future of our cause will be bright forever, he said.

Expressing the expectation and belief that all the teachers would dedicate themselves to training all the schoolchildren into steadfast and competent talents, always mindful that their crystal-clear conscience and devotion dedicated to the teaching will lead to the feats of their disciples who will contribute to the prosperity and development of the country, he had a photo taken with the participants.

Comrade Kim Jong Un met with the members of the delegation of educationists of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) who attended the conference.

After shaking hands with all the Chongryon educators who are making great painstaking efforts for the future of Chongryon, he asked them to train a larger number of reliable pillars, competent talents who will carry forward the patriotic cause and had a photo taken with them.

At the end of the photo session, the participants raised enthusiastic cheers again.

Comrade Kim Jong Un hoped that all the educators in the country, including the participants, would achieve successes in their work.

All the participants vowed to repay with loyalty the great trust of Comrade Kim Jong Un who organized the grand conference of educators and repeatedly showed for them the loving care and affection that they will always remember. -0-

Film Review From Staffordshire KFA UK

 

I was able to watch the classic DPRK feature film "The Flower Girl" on DVD, which had English subtitles. This film was produced in 1972 and it is based on a play authored by Kim IL Sung during the revolutionary struggle of the 1930s. "The Flower Girl" is set in the time when Korea was a colony of the Japanese Empire, and explores the issues of class, nationality and gender. With her little sister Sun Hui, who was blinded by the wife of the Landlord, Kkotpun, the heroine of the film, goes out on the streets of the local town to sell flowers so as to get enough for medicine for her sick mother. The mother of Kkptpun toils relentlessly for the landlord and his wife, earning very little for long hours of labour. The film vividly depicts the misery of the years when the Korean people were under the yoke of Japanese colonialism and the feudal lords. Even away from the immediate setting of "The Flower Girl", of colonized Korea in the 1930s, that the messages of the film was how poverty and exploitation is a degrading reality for a vast number of people (even here in Britain, the increased use of foodbanks) in the world and the way to overcome oppression is to educate and organise, and overthrow the system. Towards the end of the film the peasants organise themselves to fight the landlords inspired by the example of Kkptpun's brother Chol Ryong, who has returned from fighting with the Korean Revolutionary Army. "The Flower Girl" was awarded by the highest prize at the 1972 Karlovy Vary International Film, Czechoslovakia

 The British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea , the Korean Friendship Association of the UK(KFA UK )  and the UK Preparatory Committee to Celebrate the Foundation of the DPRK   issued a joint statement  to mark the  occasion of the 78th  anniversary of the foundation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) by the great leader President KIM IL SUNG:

On the 9th of September 1948, 78 years ago , the Democratic People's Republic of Korea , a Juche-orientated socialist state , was born.  The correctness of the Juche idea and of the leadership of the great leader President KIM IL SUNG , the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL and respected Marshal KIM JONG UN is proved by the durability of the DPRK 

  The foundation of the DPRK was the birth of a new state of Juche in the far east ! The DPRK was the first people's democracy in  Asia, a new kind of people's power. With the foundation of the DPRK the Korean people took power in their own hands.

    The DPRK inherited the proud traditions of the anti-Japanese revolutionary armed struggle led by the great leader President KIM IL SUNG.       The foundation of the DPRK was a powerful inspiration to the oppressed peoples  of the world ,groaning under imperialist oppression, in their struggle for independence and national liberation. It was also a great inspiration to the international proletariat advancing towards socialism .

    The DPRK under the wise leadership of the great leader comrade KIM IL SUNG fully completed the tasks of the anti-imperialist, anti- feudal democratic revolution in a short space of time and switched over to the socialist revolution proving the validity of the Juche-orientated theory on continuous revolution. The DPRK is not a replica of another country and pursues independent Juche-orientated policies. It is based firmly on the principles of independence, self-sufficiency and self-defence. As great generalissimo KIM JONG IL said "Our Republic is an independent socialist State that absolutely maintains its Juche character and thoroughly preserves its national identity in its development and activities.

  The Juche character and national identity are the independence and lifeline of a country, a nation and the masses of the people. The struggle of the masses for independence is waged with the country and nation as a unit, so the party, the government and the masses of each country should conduct the revolution and construction independently and creatively as masters."

   Indeed the DPRK is known by friend and foe as the most independent state in the world.

    Under the wise leadership of President KIM IL SUNG  the DPRK created a people-centred socialist system in which there is no exploitation and oppression .The improvement of the people's living standards is the supreme principle of state activity and this is underpinned by legalisation. The DPRK  introduced free medical care and free education. It abolished taxation in 1974. The DPRK is a people's paradise. As the great eternal leader President KIM IL SUNG  said

"Our people are now enjoying fully independent and creative lives in the embrace of the Republic, as masters of the state and society.

In our country all the people exercise their full rights to independence through their active participation in the political life of the state. They are adding lustre to their worthwhile lives through their creative struggle to achieve the high aim set by the Party, helping and leading each other forward, closely united on the basis of revolutionary constancy and comradeship. All the material and cultural needs, such as food, clothing, and housing, are met by the state, which also provides them with secure jobs according to their abilities. They are leading equally happy lives, receiving the benefits of free education, free medical care and so on from the state and society."

. Today the DPRK is marching ahead holding high the banner of Juche , the banner of self-reliance bravely defying the sanctions of the US-led imperialist hostile forces.

On the Occasion of the 78th Founding Anniversary of the DPRK - For the People’s Wellbeing

September 9, 2026, marks the 78th founding anniversary of the Democratic People’s

Republic of Korea.

Since its founding, the government of the DPRK has consistently maintained the

people-first idea in state building and activities for nearly eight decades. Today, under the

wise leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, it is ushering in a new era of

rejuvenation where its people’s ideals come true.

During the term of the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly alone, modern streets with tens

of thousands of flats were built in the capital city of Pyongyang, and many characteristic

dwelling houses in the rural areas across the country. All of them were provided to the

working people free of charge.

Through the dynamic implementation of the regional development policy in the new era,

modern regional-industry factories, livestock farms and large-scale greenhouse farms have

been built, bringing about eye-opening changes in the development of the regional economy and the people’s living standards.

Pyongyang General Hospital, Kangdong County Hospital and other modern healthcare

facilities have been inaugurated to contribute to the promotion of the people’s health. The

city of Samjiyon has been turned into an all-season mountain tourist town, and the Wonsan

Kalma Coastal Tourist Area built into a tourist destination on the coast of the East Sea of

Korea, unfolding a new phase of socialist civilization.

These entities conducive to promoting the people’s wellbeing are inconceivable apart
