Since the Workers Party of Korea was founded as the Communist Party of North Korea by the great leader President KIM IL SUNG on the 10th of October 1945 , it has travelled a road of glory , a road of victory . It has travelled the road of Juche and the road of self-reliance .
Today the Workers Party of Korea (WPK ), which is proudly celebrating its 81st anniversary is the socialist ruling party of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a party with millions of members from all walks of life . The origins of the WPK go back a long way . The historical root of the WPK is the Down With Imperialism Union(DIU) which was founded 100 years ago on the 17th of October 1926 in the year of the general strike . President KIM IL SUNG formed the DIU from the ranks of revolutionary youth and students during the Japanese imperialist occupation .
The WPK is proof of the saying that “from small acorns mighty oaks grow “ because from its humble origins during the years of the anti-Japanese armed struggle it rose up to become a mighty party of Juche , the supreme general staff of the Korean revolution and organiser and guide of the Korean people’s victories. The WPK is a party not only with millions of members but a true mass party that mobilises over two dozen million people to build socialism and to form a single harmonious whole . I witnessed this with my own eyes when I visited the DPRK in 2015 for the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Workers Party of Korea and ten years later in 2025 for the 80th anniversary of the WPK . On both occasions I witnessed momentous events celebrating such as huge military and civilian parades which demonstrated the unity of the people .
All this has been achieved through hard and continuous struggle under the correct leadership of President KIM IL SUNG , Chairman KIM JONG IL and respected Marshal KIM JONG UN over the past eight decades .
The WPK was not built in easy times , far from it . During its early days in the 1940s it had to face the dirty tricks and sabotage of factionalists who tried to stop the foundation of the WPK or to split it .
The WPK received a baptism of fire when the US imperialists provoked the Fatherland Liberation War (Korean War ) in June 1950 but the steel strong WPK under the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG roused the people to defeat the US aggressors and also internal enemies such as the counter-revolutionary factionalists .
The WPK not only led the Fatherland Liberation War to victory but after the war,which formally ended in 1953 , it guided the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country from the war damage and also embarked on the road of socialist industrialisation as well as transforming agriculture and trade along socialist lines. By 1958 an advanced socialist system centred on the people had come into being . Socialist industrialisation was completed by 1970 . Because the WPK always followed the people-first principle and was a motherly party, the people enjoyed the maximum benefits such as free healthcare , free education , low cost food ,abolition of taxation and free housing .
Under the leadership of Chairman KIM JONG Il the establishment of the monolithic ideological system of Juche was pushed forward and the line of the three revolutions ; ideological , technical and cultural was laid down . Today the line of the three revolutions is continued under the leadership of respected comrade KIM JONG UN .
When many ruling parties of the socialist countries succumbed to the onslaught of anti-socialism and the wind of bourgeois liberalism in the early 1990s , the WPK under the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG and Chairman KIM JONG IL firmly upheld the red banner of socialism .
In the mid 1990s When the imperialists tried to strangle Korean style socialism by means of sanctions and military pressure the WPK guided by Chairman KIM JONG IL led the arduous march and forced march to victory . It was in this period that the DPRK launched its first artificial satellite in 1998.
Respected comrade KIM JONG UN urged the WPK to make selfless ,devoted efforts for the people. Although the DPRK faced an immensely difficult situation which included multiple sanctions of the imperialists , natural disasters and the global health crisis in the early 2020s , the country pushed ahead with new Five Year plans and the massive housing construction such as Mirae Scientists Street , Ryomyong Street , Hwasong Street and whole new towns and cities .These achievements are truly awesome.
The WPK’s 81 year long history has been a history of victory and glory .
