President KIM IL SUNG led the Korean people to repulse the unbridled aggression of the Yankee imperialists who along with the fascist puppets of the ROK and 15 pro-American satellite states attacked the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) , the homeland of Juche in June 1950. During the Fatherland Liberation War President KIM IL SUNG served as the Chairman of the Military Commission as well as Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army and Premier of the Cabinet.
The Korean people won a great victory against the US imperialists who were forced to conclude an armistice on the 27th of July 1953 . President KIM IL SUNG who was the legendary anti-Japanese guerrilla commander who won independence from Japanese colonialism, became known as the ever-victorious iron-willed brilliant commander who vanquished the US imperialists.
However President KIM IL SUNG was more than a great military commander and a gifted military strategist who defeated two imperialisms- US and Japanese , he was also a true people’s leader and tender-hearted father of the people who took care of people’s living conditions even in the days of war and also planned for the future of the country .
Although the DPRK was bombed day and night by the US imperialist and everything was blown to smithereens , no one starved to death and there was no one begging or war orphans wandering the streets. President KIM IL SUNG living a frugal life declaring that “When the people have to live on foxtail millet, we must also eat foxtail millet.”
President KIM IL SUNG had the levels of food rations and consumer goods for industrial workers, technicians and office workers increased, and systematically lowered the prices of goods. It seems unthinkable that prices could be lowered in wartime when in capitalist countries prices increase every day in peacetime.
I remember reading the 1972 “Short Biography “ of President KIM IL SUNG which recounted how the US imperialists smashed all the soy jars when they occupied a village .On learning about this President KIM IL SUNG ordered lorryloads of soy sauce as well as rubber shoes to be sent to the village.
In November 1952 President KIM IL SUNG had Cabinet Decision No. 203 “On Enforcing Free Medical Care System for the People” adopted and in January 1953 the free medical care system of the DPRK came into effect even in the flames of war . President KIM IL SUNG also made sure that social assistance was organized widely for the families of patriotic martyrs, disabled soldiers and the dependents of the People’s Army soldiers, that schools and orphanages for the children of patriotic martyrs and schools for disabled soldiers were set up in many places, that clothes and food were supplied to the war victims by organizing a rescue commission, and that primary schools and orphanages for the war orphans were established.
Even at the height of the war when the US imperialists were dropping tons of bombs on the DPRK President KIM IL SUNG envisaged the reconstruction of Pyongyang . In January 1951 he instructed that a master plan for the reconstruction of Pyongyang be drawn up . In order to facilitate this President KIM IL SUNG had the Universities re-opened so cadres needed for the reconstruction of Pyongyang could be trained . This is truly remarkable ! Probably no other leader in the world planned reconstruction at the height of a war .
No other leader could both lead his people to victory and at the same time take care of their livelihoods and plan for future reconstruction . We salute President KIM IL SUNG on July 27th Fatherland Liberation War Victory Day !
