What Does Albanian Incident Show
from “Rodong Sinmun”, 10 April 1997
The recent situation unfolding in Albania is providing a serious lesson to people.
As already reported, in Albania, where socialism has been frustrated and capitalism has been restored, anti-government protest movements have erupted nationwide, triggered by the bankruptcy of deceptive financial security policies, and have escalated into mass armed riots. Approximately one-third of the country’s regions have fallen under the control of armed rioters, and Albania’s political situation has reached a catastrophic state. With the state’s control functions paralyzed, Albania is in a state of disorder and anarchy. In fact, the risk of state collapse is now looming in Albania.
Western politicians are expressing surprise at the Albanian situation, evaluating it as an unexpected event. However, it is neither unexpected nor particularly surprising. It is an event that was bound to occur in a country like Albania, which has deviated from the normal trajectory of historical development and taken an abnormal path.
The serious political crisis in Albania is an inevitable result of the loss of the centripetal force of the state.
For a country to have political strength, for its people to be united and for the political situation to be stable, it must possess centripetal force. The solidity and power of the state regime and political system are guaranteed by strong centripetal force. At the core of this lies the ideological belief that defends the demands and interests of the masses, and the firm unity of the party, the people and the military based on this belief.
Albania was once a socialist country. During the socialist era, Albania had centripetal force based on socialist ideology. At that time, the Albanian people were united under socialist ideology and followed the path of social progress and development. Albania’s political situation was stabilized by socialist state’s centripetal force, and the people supported and followed the socialist regime and socialist politics. During the socialist period, no crisis or risk of state collapse ever emerged in Albania.
How, then, did Albania lose its centripetal force and come to face the danger of state collapse?
Above all, this is attributable to the abandonment of the ideology and system of socialism.
Socialist society is upheld, advanced and solidified by socialist ideology. Socialist ideology is a scientific ideology that reflects the nature and aspirations of the masses and is the ideological pillar of socialist society. In the past, Albania was able to follow the path of progress and development because the socialist system, with socialist ideology as its ideological foundation, existed.
In Albania, the betrayal of socialism by the traitors who abandoned socialist ideas and principles led to the loss of centripetal force and brought the country to the brink of collapse and ruin.
In Albania, the bourgeois restorationists, pursuing “reform” and “openness”, harbored illusions and expectations about the “aid” of imperialists, foolishly attempting to entrust the nation’s fate entirely to foreign powers, hoping to save their own destiny through the grace of others.
Socialist society is the most advanced, superior and developed people-centered society among all societies that have existed in the long history of humanity. Compared to capitalism, socialism has a much shorter history of development and existence but, during this period, it achieved leaps and bounds of development that were unimaginable and unprecedented under capitalism, providing the people with a stable and happy life. This is clear evidence of socialism’s progressiveness, superiority and vitality compared to capitalism. Of course, socialism’s history of development is very short and, as it faces constant challenges from international reactionaries, it is treading an unfamiliar path that humanity has never walked before, so there may be difficulties and twists and turns along the way. However, this does not mean that socialism itself is flawed.
We must examine the issue rationally from the standpoint of historical principles and social development.
Nevertheless, the traitors of socialism and bourgeois restorationists, comparing socialism, which has a history of only a few decades, with capitalism, which has a history of several centuries, exaggerated some abnormal defects that appeared during the socialist construction process, as if socialist ideology itself was wrong and there were some “major flaws and errors” in the socialist method, and pushed socialist society towards “reform” and “openness”. In other words, under the guise of “reform” and “openness”, they eroded all things socialist, allowed and accepted bourgeois ideology and culture and the capitalist system and methods, and moved towards the path of bourgeois restoration and dependence on foreign powers.
The anti-historical, anti-popular actions of the traitors of socialism, who led the superior socialist society that loves and values humanity towards the old, rotten and decadent bourgeois restoration that despises and rejects humanity, caused all sorts of degenerate bourgeois ideas to flood Albania, fostered the law of the jungle and deepened social inequality and contradictions. Society became divided, all sorts of crimes flourished and people’s lives fell into ruin. This eventually led to the explosion of the people’s anger and brought the country to the brink of collapse and ruin.
The Albanian incident shows that political crisis and the ruin of the nation are inevitable if the principle and mode of socialism are given up, the political and economic methods of capitalism are introduced and the destiny of the country is entrusted to outside forces.
Therefore, we must not deviate from the trajectory of historical development and must not depend on foreign powers to live off the grace of others. This is the warning of history.
The Albanian incident proves once again that the consistent policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on giving priority to ideological factor is the fundamental way of defending and advancing socialism.
Ideology is the life of socialism.
The power of socialism is the power of ideology.
Ideology is the eternal life force and the invincible source of power for socialism. Grasping ideology leads to victory, and abandoning ideology leads to defeat. This is the lesson and truth of history. The collapse of socialism in the former Soviet Union and other countries was also a consequence of ideological poverty and the abandonment of ideology.
Prioritizing ideological factor is a historical summary of socialist construction and an essential requirement for defending and upholding socialism.
Our country is a strong ideological power, possessing the immortal and great Juche idea, which is consistently supported and revered by progressive humanity. We advocate ideological work and regard it as most important. Ideology is the starting point of all our thoughts, activities and practices, and the decisive factor in all our achievements and victories. Our socialism continues to advance triumphantly despite all sorts of counter-revolutionary offensives and challenges by imperialist and reactionary allied forces because we firmly grasp ideology and build and uphold socialism with the power of ideology.
The Albanian incident also shows that, in face of increasing anti-socialist pressure from outside, a closely-knitted mosquito net should be set up so that any unsound ideas can not infiltrate.
In Albania, by opening the door to bourgeois liberalization and ideological and cultural infiltration, all sorts of capitalist evil spirits massively infiltrated, corroding people’s ideological spirit, paralyzing national self-consciousness, undermining and corrupting the internal structure and creating cultural and moral decay. If Albania had not opened the door to imperialist “liberalization” and yellow propaganda, capitalist restoration would not have occurred and the risk of state collapse could have been avoided.
Today, imperialists are trying to apply the same tactics they used to collapse socialism in several countries to us. They are using reactionary propaganda and slanderous means such as “Radio Free Asia” to instigate “liberalization” and yellow germs within us. However, such means and methods do not work on us at all. We have the most superior political philosophy in the world, and our people have chosen socialism not by anyone’s coercion but by their own beliefs and aspirations. Socialism is the life, livelihood and cradle of our people.
The Korean people, who firmly believe that upholding socialism leads to victory and abandoning it leads to death, never allow any unsound ideas that do not suit their idea, emotion and their socialist system and life. Our party, people and People’s Army are firmly united ideologically and willfully around the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il, the great teacher and brilliant commander of ideology and theory, and absolutely trust and support the ideological and revolutionary leadership of our party. Our ideological and political fortress, our state’s centripetal force, is strong and unshakable. Our people regard betrayal and treachery as shame and death, and most hate and despise them.
We will decisively and mercilessly smash anyone who attempt to violate our sovereignty, dignity and system. The imperialists’ wish for some “change” in the DPRK is as foolish as wanting the sun to fall. Our ideology, faith and single-hearted unity are unbreakable and ever-victorious.
Our people will hold high the great Juche ideology and the red flag, achieve victory in the confrontation with imperialism, firmly uphold our style of socialism centered on the masses, and continue to shine it endlessly.
