Today socialism and independence in People’s Korea is defended by the mighty Korean People’s Army ,the invincible steel strong force of the Juche . It is thanks to the Korean People’s Army that no foreign force can land helicopters on the soil of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) and kidnap the head of state . No foreign power can impose a no fly zone on the DPRK . The strength of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) commanded by its supreme commander respected comrade KIM JONG UN guarantees a peaceful environment for socialist construction in the DPRK and the continuous raising of living standards .

Today’s KPA which is equipped with ICBMs and even military reconnaissance satellites had humble beginnings . It was on the 8th of February 1948 the KPA was founded as a regular revolutionary armed force by President KIM IL SUNG , it was actually founded before the foundation of the DPRK . The foundation of the KPA marked the transformation of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army into a regular armed force , a guerrilla based force which had founded by President KIM IL SUNG in April 1932 and had waged guerrilla warfare against the Japanese imperialist aggressors who had occupied Korea and oppressed the people . The foundation of the KPA was probably one of the few instances of a guerrilla army being transformed into a regular armed force.
As early as 1945 , only few days after the liberation of Korea President KIM IL SUNG stressed that “ For a country to become a fully sovereign state we must organise our own powerful national army capable of defending the country and the people and safeguarding the gains of the revolution”
Because of the aggressive moves of the reactionary US imperialists to invade the northern part of Korea , the setting up a regular armed force by transforming the existing Korean People’s Revolutionary Army into the KPA was imperative .The US imperialists had landed in the southern part of Korea in September 1945 and had created a puppet regime as well as establishing military bases in south Korea and started to create a south Korean puppet army with those who had collaborated with the Japanese and served in the Japanese armed forces. From 1947 there were 270 incursions into the territory of north Korea . Areas such as Mt Unpa and Kuksa Peak were attacked by the US imperialists. The US was opposed to the Korean revolution and the building of a people’s democracy in the north of Korea .
President KIM IL SUNG deeply analysing the situation gave priority to building up the revolutionary armed forces along with an independent armaments industry .On the 17th of November 1945 he established the Pyongyang Institute .President KIM IL SUNG also established an independent munitions industry. The DPRK’s very own armaments industry factory was established at Pyongchon.
President KIM IL SUNG selected cadres who had been steeled in the anti-Japanese armed struggle to command the new revolutionary armed force , such as Kim Chaek , Choe Yong Gon, An Kil, Kang Kon, Kim Il , Choe Hyon, Ryu Kyong Su(who the famous 105 tank division is named after),O Paek Ryong,Jo Jong Chol and Cho Chun Guk.
When the KPA was founded in 1948 it had few modern weapons and equipment . It also received a real baptism of fire when in June 1950 the US imperialists instigated the ROK puppets to attack the DPRK thus provoking the great Fatherland Liberation War . The KPA was just over 2 years old when the Fatherland Liberation War began and had to face the armed forces of not only the US imperialists , the world’s biggest imperialist power but the armed forces of the ROK puppets and 15 satellite states of US imperialism . Commanded by President KIM IL SUNG ,an ever-victorious iron-willed brilliant commander the young KPA and Korean people inflicted a tremendous defeat on the US imperialist aggressors .
The KPA was also victorious in the serious confrontation with the US imperialists after 1953.inflicting defeats on the US imperialists during the "Pueblo Incident " of 1968, the EC121 Incident of 1969, the Panmunjom incident of 1976 and the 1994 helicopter incident. When the US imperialists tried to use military pressure under the pretext of the nuclear issue in the 1990s and 2000s , the KPA commanded by Chairman KIM JONG IL faced down the US imperialists safeguarding the dignity and honour of the DPRK.
Under the leadership of respected comrade KIM JONG UN , the KPA has become a formidable revolutionary armed force not only strong in ideology and internal unity but also possessing powerful weaponry such as ICBM’s , nuclear weapons and other advanced weaponry that acts as a powerful war deterrent . The KPA has also been able to conduct overseas military operations giving internationalist assistance to other countries .
Thus the Korean People’s Army has come a long way since its foundation on the 8th of February 1948 thanks to the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG , Chairman KIM JONG IL and respected Marshal KIM JONG UN.
