75th anniversary of People’s Korea , a unique people -centred socialist country-special article by Dr Dermot Hudson

On the 9th of September 1948 the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) , the homeland of Juche and a model country of socialism , was founded by the great leader President KIM IL SUNG , the legendary hero of the Korean people’s anti-Japanese war .

It has been remarked upon by more than one person that the DPRK is the only socialist country to celebrate its 75th anniversary ; the USSR was dissolved on the 25th of December 1991 before it could reach its 70th anniversary and the Eastern European socialist countries barely reached their 40th anniversaries. The Paris Commune of 1871 regarded by many as the world’s first proletarian state lasted a mere 2 months .After the great October Proletarian socialist revolution there were short lived ‘Soviet Republics’ in Hungary , Bavaria  , Finland and other countries which lasted no longer than 6 months . In Ireland the Limerick Soviet lasted only 3 days.

The DPRK has outlasted other socialist states because it is a unique socialist country which has created a durable , invincible Juche-based socialism centred upon the popular masses .Juche -based socialism was created by President KIM IL SUNG and further developed and solidified by Chairman KIM JONG IL and respected Marshal KIM JONG UN.

Socialism in the DPRK was not the creation or a gift of another country but was based on the Juche idea . As the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL wrote  “. Our Republic, which incorporates the great Juche idea in its State building and State activities, is a people-centred socialist country in which the people are regarded as God, an independent socialist State with a strong Juche character and national identity “ and respected Marshal KIM JONG UN  pointed out that “ Our socialism is an independent socialism strong in the Juche character and national identity.

The DPRK pursued independent and original policies rejecting dogmatism , revisionism and big power chauvinism .In the DPRK agriculture was co-operativised before mechanisation  because it was the demand of the working farmers . The DPRK did not join the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance(CMEA)  but instead built a powerful independent national economy built on self-reliance . The DPRK built its own defence industry and did not rely on others for military support .In recent years despite the global pandemic and the inroad of Covid 19  the DPRK rejected imperialist aid and resolved the situation by its own efforts displaying the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance under the leadership of respected Marshal KIM JONG UN .

The Juche-based socialism of the DPRK is people-centred socialism . The DPRK since its foundation in 1948 has always pursued people-oriented policies. This is another factor in the durability of Juche-based socialism .In People’s Korea there is free education , free health care, even free housing , low cost food and cheap public transport (the Pyongyang Metro is famous for being the cheapest underground rail network in the world ). Taxation was abolished in March 1974.In People’s Korea everything is for the people .At present the DPRK is carrying out massive housing construction both in Pyongyang and in local areas. When floods and typhoons struck Marshal KIM JONG UN made sure the reconstruction of housing was the first priority .

Some socialist countries became mired in bureaucracy and socialism was corroded in those countries but the DPRK under the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG developed the Chongsan-ri Method and Chongsan Ri spirit in which leading officials go down to basic units and the superiors help their subordinates.

All the above factors have cemented the invincibility of the DPRK, an independent socialist power of Juche where the people are united in one mind and one heart around the great Workers Party of Korea, the socialist system , the Juche Idea and Supreme leader Marshal KIM JONG UN . We wish People’s Korea another 75 years and indeed another 750 years !

Glory to Juche -based socialism !

Glory to the DPRK , the country of the people !

Night View of Pyongyang

These are night scenes of Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The Tower of the Juche Idea (170m), known as the highest stone tower in the world, the Chollima Statue, the decorative illumination along the streets, the lights from the dwelling houses harmonize well, adding much to the beautiful night scenery of the city.

A Conference Declared Open by a 78-Year-Old Peasant

In the first half of the last century the Korean people put an end to the 40-year-long military occupation of their country by the Japanese imperialists and set out to build a new, prosperous and democratic country by their own efforts.

In February 1946, the first year after the liberation of Korea (August 15, 1945), the Provisional People’s Committee of North Korea was established as a people’s democratic government for carrying out the immediate tasks of the anti-imperialist, anti-feudal democratic revolution. It enforced democratic reforms including agrarian reform, enactment of sex equality law and nationalization of major industries in a short span of time. The democratic reforms resulted in colonial and feudal remnants liquidated in all spheres of social life, national industry beginning to revive and a democratic educational and cultural system set up.

Following the successful implementation of the tasks of the anti-imperialist, anti-feudal democratic revolution, a conference of the provincial, city and county people’s committees of north Korea for founding the People’s Committee of North Korea was held on February 17, 1947.

The conference was a historic one at which the People’s Committee of North Korea, the genuine supreme power organ of the people, was formed for the first time in the history of the Korean nation. The conference approved the democratic laws announced by the Provisional People’s Committee of North Korea and discussed and proclaimed the plan for national economic development for 1947. In view of the character and significance of the conference, who would deliver the opening address was an important issue.

Who delivered the opening address?

On February 16, the day before the conference, Kim Il Sung learned in detail about the preparations for the conference from the members of its preparatory committee in his office in the Provisional People’s Committee of North Korea.

Upon hearing that they had yet to select the person who would deliver the opening address, he said that it would be good to choose the oldest peasant or worker among the delegates to the conference, who had long undergone hardships before liberation and was now working faithfully in support of the people’s government.

The person who conformed to these criteria was a delegate from Kangdong County.

He was an ordinary peasant who had lived as a farm hand and sharecropper for 30 years in the county. After the liberation of the country he had assiduously farmed the land distributed to him, and paid the tax in kind before anyone else and donated rice to the country out of patriotism. Approved as a hard-working peasant by the villagers, he had been elected to the county people’s committee.

The day before the conference Kim Il Sung met the old peasant. After hearing his account of his family background, Kim Il Sung said to him: Now our peasants have become the eternal masters of the country and the land; ours is a really good system as an old man like you has been elected as a member of the people’s committee; I would like you to deliver the opening address at the conference.

The old man was so surprised and moved by his unexpected offer that he declined.

Then Kim Il Sung earnestly said to the old man that he could do it well and that if he did, it would exert a great influence on the participants in the conference.

In this way the 78-year-old peasant delivered the opening address.

This anecdote eloquently testifies to the fact that the conference was a grand meeting of genuine representatives of the people, who had become the masters of the country, to build a supreme power organ that embodied the will of the people.
