Last year, in reflection of the national desire for reunification and the requirements of the times, we put forward the Juche-oriented line and policy of reunification at the Seventh Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea and made strenuous efforts to this end. However, the south Korean authorities turned a deaf ear to our patriotic appeal and ignored our sincere proposal. Instead, they clung to their sanctions-and-pressure schemes against the DPRK and persisted in clamouring for a war against it, thus driving inter-Korean relations towards the worst catastrophe.

Last year, south Korea witnessed a massive anti-"government" struggle spreading far and wide to shake the reactionary ruling machinery to its foundations. This resistance involving all south Korean people, which left an indelible mark in the history of their struggle, was an outburst of pent-up grudge and indignation against the conservative regime that had been resorting to fascist dictatorship, anti-popular policy, sycophantic and traitorous acts and confrontation with their compatriots.

This year we will mark the 45th anniversary of the historic July 4 Joint Statement and the 10th anniversary of the October 4 Declaration. This year we should open up a broad avenue to independent reunification through a concerted effort of the whole nation.

Positive measures should be taken to improve inter-Korean relations, avoid acute military confrontation and remove the danger of war between north and south.

The improvement of inter-Korean relations is the starting-point for peace and reunification, and it is a pressing demand of the whole nation. Any politician, if he or she remains a passive onlooker to the current deadlock between the two sides, can neither claim to be fully discharging his or her responsibility and role for the nation nor enjoy public support. Every manner of abuses and slanders aimed at offending the other party and inciting confrontation cannot be justified on any account, and an immediate stop should be put to the malicious smear campaign and other acts of hostility towards the DPRK, all designed for the overthrow of its system and any other "change."

We are consistent in our stand to safeguard the security of the compatriots and peace of the country without fighting with the fellow countrymen. The south Korean authorities should not aggravate the situation by finding fault with our exercise of the right to self-defence thoughtlessly, but respond positively to our sincere efforts to prevent military conflict between north and south and ease the tension.

They should also discontinue arms buildup and war games.

The whole nation should pool their will and efforts to usher in a heyday of the nationwide reunification movement.

All the Korean people in the north, in the south and abroad should achieve solidarity, make concerted efforts and unite on the principle of subordinating everything to national reunification, the common cause of the nation, and revitalize the reunification movement on a nationwide scale. They should promote active contact and exchange with each other irrespective of differences in their ideologies and systems, regions and ideals, and classes and social strata, and hold a pan-national, grand meeting for reunification involving all the political parties and organizations including the authorities in the north and south, as well as the compatriots of all strata at home and abroad. We will readily join hands with anyone who prioritizes the fundamental interests of the nation and is desirous of improving inter-Korean relations.

It is necessary to frustrate the challenges of the anti-reunification forces at home and abroad who go against the aspiration of the nation for reunification.

We must put an end to the moves for aggression and intervention by the foreign forces including the United States that is occupying south Korea and tries to realize the strategy for achieving hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region, and wage a dynamic pan-national struggle to thwart the moves of the traitorous and sycophantic anti-reunification forces like Park Geun Hye who, failing to see clearly who is the real arch-enemy of the nation, is trying to find a way out in confrontation with the fellow countrymen.

Well aware of the will of the Korean nation to reunify their country, the United States must no longer cling to the scheme of whipping up national estrangement by inciting the anti-reunification forces in south Korea to confrontation with the fellow countrymen and war. It must make a courageous decision to roll back its anachronistic policy hostile towards the DPRK. The international community that values independence and justice should oppose the moves of the United States and its vassal forces aimed at wrecking peace on the Korean peninsula and checking its reunification, and the neighbouring countries should act in favour of our nation's aspiration and efforts for reunification.

All the fellow countrymen in the north, in the south and abroad should do something to make this year a meaningful year of a new phase in independent reunification by stepping up a nationwide grand march towards reunification through the concerted effort of the nation.

Seeing the Exciting Year Out

This year is drawing to a close.

2016, which witnessed gargantuan events, has come to an end. This year has taught a lot to the people.

Striking realities of north and south Korea where the world’s unique divided nation lives are so shocking.

In the DPRK, a lot of auspicious events are recorded in the national history.

Under the wise leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Un, the great father of nation, Sci-tech Complex was opened on New Year’s Day. It started this year when the 7th Congress of the WPK was held with the successful detonation test of the first H-bomb, the national pride.

In February, the earth observation satellite “Kwangmyongsong-4” was successfully launched and in March, foiling the vicious sanctions of the hostile forces against the Korean nation, the construction of Ryomyong Street-the symbol of self-development was started.

During the 70-day campaign to mark the congress of the WPK, the glorious creatures of self-development-first principle were achieved in various fields of national economy.

The series of successes of tests of strategic weapons including ballistic missiles, guided weapons and SLBM built up the national pride and self-confidence. The 7th Congress of the WPK was held in the grand manner to be recorded as a congress of victory and glory in the history of great Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism party.

In the congress, Kim Jong Un was elected as Chairman of the WPK and he was elected as Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK in the Supreme People’s Assembly.

Paying no regard to his safety, he inspected to the forefront posts including defense detachments on Mahap and Jangjae islets and outpost on Kali Islet to implant the sense of defender’s mission in the hearts of the service personnel. Thanks to his great leadership of Songun, the safety and sovereignty of the nation are safeguarded despite the aggressive maneuvers of the foreign forces.

Under the energetic leadership of the Chairman who leads the people along the road of independence, Songun and socialism, the DPRK is demonstrating its might of a youth power without an equal in the world and series of victories are achieved during the 200-day campaign.

He always keeps his people in his mind and gives top priority to their welfare. Under his warm care, the miracle of turning adversity into favorable condition created again in the flood-stricken area in North Hamgyong Province of the DPRK and hurrahs for the Chairman and the WPK reverberated throughout the country. Newly created projects for the people such as the Juche-oriented sugar-making system, the leading fruit farms, good haul of fish and public health establishments are associated with energetic guidance and warm care shown by the Chairman.

While world-shaking miracles have been worked under the great person’s leadership in the DPRK, in south Korea treacherous acts such as THAAD deployment for the interests of the outside forces and scandals have been rampant and the life of the people have fallen into misery under the anti-popular misgovernment of the ruling circles.

Yearning for the successes gained in the DPRK, the south Korean people struggling for popular-centered society keep clear truth in their mind as following.

“The greatness of nation is the greatness of a leader. Thanks to the wise leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Un, the day of reunification in which all the Korean people enjoy happy life will come without fail and a reunified Korea will always be in the glory of its victory.”

DPRK's Nuclear Deterrence for Self-Defence Is Just: KCNA Commentary

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Countries have become earnest recently in their moves to bolster a strategic nuclear force to cope with the U.S. nuclear threats.
    On Dec. 22 last year, Russian President Putin called for increasing military potentials of strategic nuclear force and securing missile attack capabilities enough to reliably cope with any missile defence system at present and in the future so as to contain the U.S. nuclear threat to Russia.
    The Chinese Huan Qui Shibao in a commentary on Dec. 23 noted that China has already become the first strategic rival of the U.S. and that most of its pressure has transferred to China step by step, adding that the table can be turned only when China's power of strategic nuclear threat becomes enough to overwhelm the U.S. It stressed that if the U.S. aircraft carrier becomes a stage for attacking China, that has to be made to certainly face the fate of sinking.
    This proves that those countries regard the bolstering of strategic nuclear force as an issue vital to protecting their independent development and peace from the U.S. increased nuclear threat and blackmail.
    Today the global instability and the danger of nuclear war increase day by day due to the U.S. reckless nuclear arms buildup and modernization moves. To cope with this, nuclear weapons states are increasing their own strategic nuclear force in quality and quantity.
    Typically, the U.S. is furthering the role of the components of its nuclear force in its NATO military strategy. About 200 U.S. nuclear bombs are already deployed in Turkey, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy and 310 carriers are on standby.
    Russia is updating triad strategic nuclear weapons system, an expression of its intent to maintain its position as a power and an exercise of its strategic power to contain NATO.
    According to 2016 Moscow review of Russia's armed forces, launching devices that have already been put on an alert amount to 99 percent in missile units of Russia and over 96 percent of them are on constant standby for launch at a moment's notice.
    A total of 41 new-type ballistic missiles have been put into commission, making the percentage of the modern weaponry of nuclear triad reach 60.
    Russia claims in 2017 three units equipped with modern weapons will additionally be deployed in Russia's nuclear missile units and the air force will be provided with five modern strategic bombers.
    China is putting spurs to developing update strategic nuclear missiles including Dongfeng-41, reaffirming its stand never to make a concession in such issues as building nuclear threat.
    Such countries boasting of vast territory, big population and immense economic potentials have made it a top priority for state development and security to bolster their own nuclear forces.
    It is quite natural for the DPRK, a country that has constantly been exposed to direct nuclear threat from the U.S., to bolster a nuclear deterrence.
    The nuclear threat to the DPRK by the U.S. is so immense incomparable with that exposed to big power around it.
    For more than half a century the U.S. has continued nuclear threat and blackmail against the DPRK, putting the biggest political and military pressure, applying the harshest sanctions and resorting to desperate moves to stifle it.
    To cope with this, the DPRK carried out its first H-bomb test and conducted test-fire of various attack means and succeeded in explosion test of nuclear warhead. The preparations for the test-fire of inter-continental ballistic missile have reached the final phase. These signal achievements in the field of strategic nuclear force clearly prove that the DPRK has now possessed of powerful strategic nuclear attack means capable of responding to any form of war to be imposed by the U.S.
    It is quite just for the DPRK to have had access and bolstered nuclear deterrence for self-defence in the face of the U.S. reckless hostile moves and open nuclear threat.
    Building strategic nuclear force to ensure one's own security and maintaining balance of force will remain core interests of countries in the future, too. -0-

   It is a most impressive   New Year address which is full of militancy and optimism. Dear respected
Marshal KIM JONG UN shows deep and remarkable modesty in the address saying that  "My desires were burning all the time, but I spent the past year feeling anxious and remorseful for the lack of my ability. I am hardening my resolve to seek more tasks for the sake of the people this year and make redoubled, devoted efforts to this end.". This  is very moving indeed.We Juche Idea and Songun idea followers of the UK are deeply impressed with this. Respected Marshal KIM JONG UN is the only leader in the world that is a true servant of the people and really cares about his people. Significantly respected Marshal KIM JONG UN  calls for a "an intensive struggle to root out abuses of power, bureaucratism and corruption that spoil the flower garden of single-hearted unity."
 Dear respected Marshal KIM JONG UN reviews the great achievements of 2016 including the successful holding of the 7th Congress of the great Workers' Party of Korea and the massive successes of the 70 day campaign and and 200 day campaign.    2017 will be a highly significant year for the DPRK as it will see the 105th anniversary of  the birth of the great leader comrade KIM IL SUNG , the 75th anniversary of the birth of the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL and the 100th anniversary of the birth of the anti-Japanese woman revolutionary heroine and Mother of Korea Madame KIM JONG SUK. It will also be a year in which the Korean people work hard to implement the decisions of the 7th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea.
 In the New Year Address Dear respected Marshal KIM JONG UN  puts forward the great slogan "Let us accelerate the victorious advance of socialism with the great spirit of self-reliance and self-development as the dynamic force!" . Self-reliance and self-development are the DPRK's secret weapon to smash the unjust and crazy US imperialist and UN sanctions.Moreover self-reliance and self-development will protect the DPRK from "reform" and "opening up " and the restoration of capitalism. Self-reliance and self -development will enable the Korean people to forge ahead at Mallima speed to implement the decisions of the 7th Congress of the WPK.Without a doubt self-reliance is the only correct way to build socialism   and win final victory over the imperialists, Respected Marshal KIM JONG UN is a wise and farsighted leader , indeed a genius, to put forward such a brilliant strategy.
   Self-reliance is to be maintained in the military field as dear respected Marshal KIM JONG UN says "Officials, scientists and workers in the defence industry, burning their hearts with the "Yongil bomb spirit" of the days of the anti-Japanese struggle and the revolutionary spirit of the workers of Kunja-ri of the days of the Fatherland Liberation War, should develop and produce larger quantities of powerful military hardware of our own style. By doing so, they can build up the arsenal of the Songun revolution.". Thus the DPRK will rely on it self for defence and not harbour illusions about big powers.
 Marshal KIM JONG UN has shocked the imperialists with the pledge to increase the defence potentials of the DPRK including the possiblity of an ICBM test. The DPRK is emerging as a socialist military power of Juche and Songun in the far east. No one should take issue with this. We support the right of the DPRK to carry the test of an intercontinental ballistic missile .
 Nevertheless the DPRK Supreme leader holds out  the olive branch to those hostile countries who may wish to reconsider their mistaken , reactionary and anachronistic anti-DPRK policies. We strongly support the call of dear respected leader Marshal KIM JONG UN for the US and south Korea to discontinue their war games on the Korean peninsula. This is most realistic and fairest way to achieve peace and security on the Korean peninsula and indeed in the world.
 Noting that 2017 is the 45th anniversary of the  historic July 4 Joint Statement and the 10th anniversary of  the October 4th declaration respected Marshal KIM JONG UN also puts forward many good ideas for achieving peaceful reunification such as holding a pan-national grand meeting. We support the call of Marshal KIM JONG UN for the south Korean authorities to completely and finally abandon foolish notions of "regime change ". We believe that the proposals put forward by dear respected Marshal KIM JONG UN represent the aspirations of the entire Korean people for reunification

Rodong Sinmun on Invariable Tenet of Foreign Policy of WPK and DPRK Government

Pyongyang, January 3 (KCNA) -- It is the steadfast will of the Workers' Party of Korea and the government of the DPRK to expand and develop the relations of good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation with those countries championing independence and struggle to ensure genuine international justice, says Rodong Sinmun in an article Tuesday.
    It goes on:
    The WPK and the DPRK government have waged a vigorous struggle to accomplish the human cause of independence, consistently adhering to an independent stand in their external activities.
    Had we failed to abide by the principle of independence in the external relations and yielded to the pressure of the imperialists and the big-power chauvinists, we would not have been able to build a socialist country -- independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy and self-reliant in defence, and the country would have been reduced to a satellite country of big powers or colonial slave of the imperialists to go to ruin.
    We dealt with all issues arising in the international arena with independence as a yardstick and waged a principled and uncompromising struggle against the practices of encroaching upon the sovereignty of other countries.
    We remain unchanged in our will to ensure peace on the Korean peninsula and in the rest of the world. Peace is dear for us but we never beg for it. If aggressors and provocateurs provoke us even a bit, we will not allow them even in the least but mercilessly wipe them out and thus achieve lasting peace. This is the firm faith and will of the army and the people of the DPRK.
    The DPRK has so far positively developed the relations of good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation with the progressive countries of the world which respect its sovereignty and are friendly towards it.
    Its stance will remain unchanged forever.
    It is the consistent stand of the DPRK to improve and normalize the ties with those countries which recognize its sovereignty and are friendly to it, breaking with their past boldly, though they had been in the hostile relationship with it in the past. -0-
