DPRK Representative Delivers Statement at Conference on Disarmament

Han Tae Song, Permanent Representative of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland delivered a statement on January 26 at the Plenary Meeting of the Conference on Disarmament held via video conference.

He said in his statement that there is no country like the DPRK on this planet which is exposed to constant threat of war, and that its people’s desire for peace is accordingly strong, and he continued:

The government of the DPRK made every effort to prevent the aggravation of the regional tension out of its strong desire to ensure peace and security on the Korean peninsula and over the world.

However, sophisticated weapons of hostile forces aimed at our state are increasing in volume, and their reckless arms build-up is undermining the international balance of power.

The reality shows that only when we bolster up our national defence capability without a moment’s halt will we be able to contain the military threat and achieve peace and prosperity of the Korean peninsula.

Therefore, it is the firm determination of the DPRK to continuously strengthen the country’s military capabilities as long as the danger of war of aggression by the hostile forces against our state persists and until such words as threat and blackmail by the hostile forces disappear on the Korean peninsula.

Our continuous strengthening of the strongest war deterrent is aimed at defending ourselves and opening up an era of genuine peace eternally freed from war.

The DPRK as a responsible nuclear-weapon state will not misuse its nuclear weapons unless the aggressive hostile forces attempt to have recourse to nuclear weapons against us.

The Permanent Representative stressed that it is the unwavering will of the government of the DPRK to reliably defend peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and over the world, as has been made clear by Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea(WPK) and President of the State Affairs of the DPRK, in his report at the historic Eighth Congress of the WPK.
