On June 15th, 2000 the leaders of the north and south halves of Korea met in Pyongyang for the very first time. This summit meeting paved the way for the positive movement towards the goal of the independent and peaceful reunification of Korea. One fundamental principle which came out of the June 15, 2000, summit was that Korea should be reunified by the Korean people themselves, in other words by Uriminzokkri (The By Our Nation Itself Method). The June 2000 Declaration established quite clearly the position that the Korean people themselves were responsible for the reunification process, whether they be in the north, in the south and overseas. Following the summit and declaration of June 2000, the road was opened for increased cooperation in the fields of economics, culture and family reunions between north and south of Korea. In recent years, there has been historical progress made in the efforts for peace and reunification upon the Korean peninsula, such as the April 2018 Panmunjom Meeting & Declaration and the September 2018 north-south Declaration agreed in Pyongyang.

Regrettably, there has been some extremist forces on the south Korean side which are attempting to sabotage the whole Korean peace process for their own sectarian purposes. These Far Right activists have been violating the essence and spirit of the various Inter-Korean accords by releasing various balloons with propaganda leaflets over the north half of Korea and other highly hostile actions. We call on the south Korean authorities to return to the policies of engagement with the north and put a halt to these extremist elements' destabilising behaviour. The Staffordshire Branch of the UK Korean Friendship Association urges the Peace and Labour Movement in our country and all people of goodwill in Great Britain to show their solidarity with the Korean people's struggle for peace and reunification, for the defence of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea and to stop any war moves in Korea. Support Korean reunification and join the Korean Friendship Association!!

KOREA IS ONE!

Issued by the Staffordshire Branch of the UK KFA.
