Today we are here to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of President KIM IL SUNG , the father of modern Korea , indeed the creator or inspirer of the miracle that is Juche Korea , a country that abolished taxation back in 1974 and yet has free healthcare , free education and virtually free housing . Juche Korea is also a state that closed its borders for more than 2 years and yet survives when others wouldn’t last beyond a few days .We could speak for hours and hours and not days about the achievements and life of President KIM IL SUNG .
My own interest in President KIM IL SUNG , People’s Korea and the Juche really began in the 1980s . I read vaguely read about President
KIM IL SUNG and his independent policy even when I was a teenager , of course the sources were very hostile ones . I thought the idea of independence in the socialist camp was a good one but I did not pursue my interest at the time for a number of reasons .However by the mid 1980s I decided to find out more about People’s Korea ,Juche and the great leader President KIM IL SUNG .
In 1985 I was lucky enough to come across a copy of KIM IL SUNG Works Volume 5 and ‘Korean Review 1974 ‘ . Reading these I came to know in more detail about the achievements of People’s Korea as well as the revolutionary activities and exploits of the great leader President KIM IL SUNG and the Juche Idea . Of course it was only the beginning . On the way home on the train I read the books with a great deal of enthusiasm and excitement. The books were like fresh ,clear spring water satiating my thirst for knowledge about the DPRK and refreshing my mind . For the first time I read about the Juche Idea . Reading several speeches from the 1960s I was greatly impressed by the militant stand of President KIM IL SUNG against US imperialism .I read how the DPRK abolished taxation in 1974 and at the same time cut prices . I read about how housing was virtually free and utility bills were very low . I also read about the amazing economic growth of the DPRK and the Chollima movement; in the late 1950s the DPRK ‘s economic growth topped 36 per cent , probably the highest ever rate of growth in the world . A flat was constructed in 14 minutes and workers at the then Kangson Steel Complex doubled production in a year . I would add here that the famous Cambridge economist Professor Joan V Robinson said called the DPRK ‘ the Korean economic miracle ‘
I soon realised that the man behind the miracle of Juche Korea was none other than President KIM IL SUNG.
President KIM IL SUNG was the greatest of great leaders. He led the anti-imperialist national liberation struggle of the Korean people against Japanese imperialism and won independence for the Korean people. They became masters of their own destiny .President KIM IL SUNG authored the Juche Idea, the acme of progressive ideas of humanity.
President KIM IL SUNG founded the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in September 1948 , the homeland of Juche and a durable socialist state centred upon the popular masses.Also he founded the Workers’ Party of Korea, the supreme general staff of the Korean revolution, the organiser and guide of the Korean people. Also he founded the Korean People’s Army, the stalwart sentential of Juche-based socialism.
It was President KIM IL SUNG who led the struggle to build a new People’s Korea on the ruins of Japanese colonialism after independence in 1945 .He also led the reconstruction of the country after the devastation caused by the US imperialists in the 1950-1953 Fatherland Liberation War and the battle for the socialist industrialisation .
Throughout his life President KIM IL SUNG was a tireless fighter for global independence. He fought to uphold revolutionary principles and opposed the revisionist backsliding in the international communist movement .
President KIM IL SUNG was a true internationalist who sent internationalist assistance to many lands of the world including Cuba, Egypt, Vietnam and many other countries. In 1945 President KIM IL SUNG dispatched some of his best fighters and commanders to assist the Chinese people and Communist Party of China in their war against the reactionary KMT , feudalism and landlordism .Under his guidance DPRK agro -technicians were sent to Africa and agricultural institutes bearing his name were established in the Revolutionary People’s Republic of Guinea .
President KIM IL SUNG was indeed a giant of the international communist movement and its elder statesman. Major Ernesto Che Guevara said that the DPRK led by the great leader President
KIM IL SUNG was the socialist country that he admired the most.
President KIM IL SUNG established an advanced socialist system in Korea centred upon the popular masses making Korea into the model country of socialism.
President KIM IL SUNG declared that “the people are my God “ and made sure that the people were put first in everything . The DPRK has neither unemployment or homelessness or anyone begging .
On the Day of the Sun ,the 110th anniversary of the birth of the great leader President KIM IL SUNG we remember President KIM IL SUNG as the great leader who built an independent socialist country and a people’s paradise in the land of the morning calm.
The ideas and exploits of President KIM IL SUNG will shine forever .
