Kumya ginkgo tree stands in Tonghung-ri, Kumya County, South Hamgyong Province in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It is the tallest and oldest ginkgo tree in the country.
It is about 40 metres high, 16 metres round at its lower part and 15 metres round at the chest height. Its crown is 37 metres from east to west and 40 metres from north to south. It spreads out in an umbrella form and shades an area of 1 800 square metres.
Its trunk forks into three at the height of 1.5 metres, and they spread out many branches. The tree bears hundreds of kilograms of fruits every year and its fallen leaves weigh several tons.
The tree looks like a hill from a distance, and the sky is hardly seen under it. So, it makes one feel as if in deep forests.
The majestic tree adds more beauty to the surrounding landscape. Designated as a natural monument, it is under special protection for its great academic significance.
