Soon the great Workers Party of Korea founded by President KIM IL SUNG on the 10th of October 1945 will mark the 78th anniversary of its existence . This in itself is a remarkable achievement .

Throughout its 78 years the Workers Party of Korea (WPK ) has held to the principle of anti-imperialism and independence . At the meeting for the celebration the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the WPK in October 1975 , President KIM IL SUNG put forward the slogan “Let Us Unite with the People of the World Who Advocate Independence “
Right from the very first days of its foundation the Workers Party of Korea led by President KIM IL SUNG and later Chairman KIM JONG IL always maintained a strong anti-imperialist position but at the same time from it also adhered to an independent position. It always adhered to the line of independence .
In the 1940s after Korea had been liberated , the Chinese communists were still fighting a bitter civil war against the Kuomintang reactionaries , the running dogs of US imperialism , so President KIM IL SUNG ensured People’s Korea sent some of its best fighters and commanders to fight on the side of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and Communist Party of China .
The Workers Party of Korea always played a pivotal role in the international communist movement . President KIM IL SUNG met leaders of the international communist movement such as JV Stalin , Mao Zedong , Enver Hoxha , and even Harry Pollitt of the British Communist Party . The WPK took part in international meetings of the Communist and workers parties in 1957 and 1960 ,However the WPK refused to take part in the 1969 international communist conference because this conference excluded the parties of China and Albania and was about widening the split in the international communist movement .
The WPK under the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG and Chairman KIM JONG IL opposed modern revisionism when it appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s from its own independent position . Both President KIM IL SUNG and Chairman KIM JONG IL wrote many works attacking modern revisionism.
The WPK did indeed unite with the peoples of the world advocating independence , the people’s fighting against imperialism . In 1962 when Cuba was betrayed by the Soviet big-power chauvinists who pulled their missiles out of Cuba , staff of the DPRK embassy and DPRK students in Cuba , armed themselves ready to fight alongside the Cuban people against the US imperialists . The DPRK sent military and material assistance to Vietnam in its national salvation war against US imperialism including pilots of the Korean People’s Army Air Force(KPAAF) and artillery experts .The DPRK also sent a squadron of KPAAF planes to fight for the Arab cause in the 1973 October war against the Israeli Zionists and US imperialists.
Under the leadership of the WPK the DPRK was always quick to condemn the moves of the US imperialists and reactionary puppet forces in many parts of the world . In 1970 when Prince Norodom Sihanouk the progressive and anti-imperialist leader of Cambodia was overthrown in a pro-US coup by Lon Nol , the DPRK broke relations with the Lon Nol puppet regime against Soviet advice . In 1973 when the US backed fascist coup d'etat by Pincohet overthrew the progressive government in Chile , the DPRK was first to break off relations with Chile but some socialist countries still kept relations with Chile. The WPK and DPRK always opposed imperialist aggression consistently for example it strongly denounced the US invasions of Grenada and Panama .It supported the Palestinian and South African peoples in their just struggles.
In the dark days of the late 1980s and early 1990s when socialism was frustrated in many countries , it was the WPK of KIM IL SUNG and KIM JONG IL that upheld socialism ,holding high the red flag of socialism when the revisionists had thrown it down . The WPK put forward in April 1992 , the 80th birthday of President KIM IL SUNG , the Pyongyang Declaration titled “ Let Us Defend and Advance the Cause of Socialism” which stated that “Ours is an era of independence and the socialist cause is a sacred one aimed at realising the independence of the popular masses.
Socialism suffered a setback in some countries in recent years. As a consequence of this, the imperialists and reactionaries are claiming that socialism has ‘come to an end’. This is nothing but a sophistry to beautify and embellish capitalism and patronise the old order.
The setback of socialism and the revival of capitalism in some countries is causing a great loss to the achievement of the socialist cause, but it can never be interpreted as the denial of the superiority of socialism and of the reactionary character of capitalism.

Many communist and workers parties signed the Pyongyang Declaration. The WPK also held many bilateral meetings with communist and workers parties.
At the 8th Congress of the WPK respected Marshal KIM JONG UN the general secretary of the WPK stressed the need for the field of external work to further develop the relations with the socialist countries, consolidate unity and cooperation with the revolutionary and progressive parties aspiring after independence, and launch a dynamic joint struggle against imperialism on a worldwide scale.
Today the WPK stands out as a militant party of anti-imperialism and independence.
