Stone River on Mt Ongnyon

The biggest and rarest of its kind in the country, the stone river is in Mt Ongnyon (2 164m above sea level) in the northeastern part of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

In general, stone river or stone sea is a peculiar geographical feature formed by rock masses moving down in a valley after being broken off from periphery of glaciers. The stone river in Mt Ongnyon was created in this way.

It has a surface gradient of about ten degrees. The water is invisible as it flows beneath rocks, but the sound of the water is heard. The thickness of the rock layer is of 4-5m on average and 15-20m in the part of the valley. The stone river is about 2km long.

The stone river adds beauty to the scenery of the mountain and is of academic significance in studying mountain glacier.
