The Arch of Triumph stands on the road at the foot of Moran Hill in the central part of Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It was erected to pass down through generations the revolutionary exploits of President Kim Il Sung who made a triumphal return to Pyongyang after winning back the independence of his country on August 15, 1945, by leading the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle to victory. As a stone structure, it is 60 metres high, 52.5 metres wide and 36.2 metres broad. It was unveiled in April 1982 to mark the 70th anniversary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung (April 15, 1912).
