The DPRK , Russia and the Ukraine -What is the Truth ?

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK ) has issued two statements including a high level one on the Ukrainian crisis that has arisen . Also the DPRK was one of several countries to vote against the US resolution in the UN ?  However the DPRK ‘s position on the Ukraine crisis has been twisted and distorted by some commentators in the mainstream media and elsewhere .

In fact neither the answer given by an official DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesperson and the article “The U.S. Should Not Shake International Peace and Stability at the Basis’ by Ri Ji Song Researcher Society for International Politics Study makes explicit reference to the ongoing Russian military actions in the Ukraine .Instead both give an analysis of the origins of the Ukraine .

The DPRK avoided any hasty , knee jerk reactions to the situation . The first mention of Ukraine by the DPRK, on  the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs website was the above mentioned article by Ri Ji Song on the 26th of February , some 4 days after the Russian military action began . The DPRK Foreign Ministry gave a formal answer on the 28th of February some 6 days afterward the actions began .

Unlike some the DPRK does not believe that Russia is a socialist state . However it does recognise Russia’s right to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty .

In the past the DPRK has been very critical of Russia . In the final years of the USSR , the Soviet traitors recognised the south Korean puppet regime , the DPRK responded with a sharp commentary in Rodong Sinmun ‘ Diplomatic relations bought and sold with dollars’ . When the USSR disappeared the Russian Federation took its place  , President KIM IL SUNG and Chairman KIM JONG IL both denounced the restoration of capitalism in Russia . Relations with the Yeltsin regime were not good . The ruling Workers Party of Korea maintained close relations with the Russian Communist Workers Party and All Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks .

Relations between the DPRK and Russia improved when V V Putin became leader of Russia . There were several summits and meetings and co-operation and exchange developed . However it was far from plain sailing ; Russia on more than one occasion voted for sanctions against People’s Korea in the UN Security Council . Thus the DPRK denounced Russia and another country for big power chauvinism . Marshal KIM JONG UN himself has criticised big power chauvinism several times and stressed that socialism in the DPRK has been built in opposition to big power chauvinism , dominationism and revisionism.

Some people will ask why vote against the UN resolution on Ukraine , why not abstain or be absent from the vote ? Well there are several reasons . Firstly, the reaction of the US and other western powers to the Ukraine crisis has been hysterical and disproportionate to say the least , Secondly , the DPRK is an independent anti -US , anti-imperialist country and it is very important to take the strongest ever stand against the US , abstaining would send an ambivalent , in fact weak signal . Thirdly , although Russia has voted for sanctions against the DPRK in the past , two wrongs never make a right , so the DPRK voted against the US resolution . So for those reasons the DPRK voted against the US resolution .
