Han Tae Song, Permanent Representative of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland delivered a statement at the Conference on Disarmament which was held on January 25.

He said that it is the reality of today that the threat of use of nuclear weapons still exists with nuclear arms race in full swing, contrary to the aspirations and efforts of humankind for building a world free from nuclear weapon, and he continued:

DPRK's war deterrent is self-defensive one to prevent the war itself and to safeguard our sovereign right. It does not target any specified country or force.

The recent test fire of the new-type weapons was part of activities for carrying out the medium- and long-term plan for the development of defence science, and it does not pose any threat or damage to the security of the neighboring countries and the region.

The United States has threatened the DPRK through unprecedented vicious hostile policy and constant nuclear blackmail. Therefore, its accusation of the DPRK's self-defensive deterrent as a "threat" is an intolerable provocation, an open act of double standard and a flagrant violation of sovereignty.

For the sake of maintaining peace and security on the Korean peninsula, the U.S. should withdraw its hostile policy and double standard towards the DPRK, and permanently end the offensive military exercises and the deployment of various nuclear strategic assets in and around the Korean peninsula.

The Permanent Representative stressed that the DPRK will continue to strengthen its war deterrent to cope with the ever deteriorating security environment of the Korean peninsula and safeguard the national sovereignty and safety of its people, and continue to fulfill its responsibility for defending the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and the rest of the world.
