The great leader comrade KIM JONG IL was a great believer in self -reliance and developing an independent , socialist,national economy based on Juche and self-reliance . It can be said it was something he devoted his entire life to ;from the time when he was a student working at lathe no 26 in the Pyongyang Textile Machinery factory and participating in the reconstruction to the time when the February 8th Vinalon Complex was renovated and modernized in 2010 .
Comrade KIM JONG IL declared in December 1978 ,when others were clamouring about ‘reform ‘ and ‘opening up ‘ , Let Us Live Our own way ‘ and in 1994 when some expected the DPRK to abandon socialism or collapse he proclaimed ‘Expect No Change from Me ‘ , which dealt a huge blow to the imperialists and revisionists .
In his celebrated classic treatise ‘ON THE JUCHE IDEA “ that was presented in 1982 comrade KIM JONG IL wrote that “ self-reliance is the revolutionary spirit and a principle of struggle of the communists in carrying out the revolution by their own initiative. One must believe in one’s own strength and depend on it in economic construction, just as in all other activities for the revolution and construction. A people who energetically struggle, with confidence in their own capability, will be able to do any difficult work. But a people who have no faith in their own power but only look up to others, will not do anything successfully. Only when one mobilizes the efforts of one’s people and the resources of one’s country and relies on one’s own financial resources and technology on the principle of self-reliance, will one be able to develop the economy quickly at one’s own desire, overcome all difficulties and bring prosperity to the country.”
For comrade KIM JONG IL self-reliance was simply not a slogan or an idea but a practical necessity, an absolute must for socialist construction . Comrade KIM JONG IL strived all the time to implement the idea of self-reliance . Here is one story that exemplifies this ; in October 1984 comrade KIM JONG IL gave on the spot guidance to the Rakwon Machine plant . This plant produced many machines including a rotary drill for the mining industry . At the time some people in the DPRK planned to import foreign made drills instead of using the Rakwon drill . Comrade KIM JONG IL organised a contest between the Rakwon drill and a foreign made one . After some improvements were made to the Rakwon drill , it won the contest hands down . This story illustrates the faith of comrade KIM JONG IL in self-reliance .
In the 1990s People’s Korea was hit by severe natural disasters as well as harsh sanctions of the imperialists plus the disappearance of the world socialist market owing to the frustration of socialism in the USSR caused by the intrigue and treachery of the modern revisionists . The vultures of imperialism looked at People’s Korea and hoped that it would either collapse or adopt’ reform’ and opening ‘ and also become an aid dependency of imperialism . Comrade KIM JONG IL who upheld self-reliance refused to bow down and instead pointed out that self-reliance was the only way out saying " We should, by holding higher the banner of the Juche idea, adhere to the principle of independence, and at all times live our own way.".
Comrade KIM JONG IL went to Jagang province in the far northern part of the DPRK , there he kindled the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance saying that " the people of Jagang province are giving full play to the spirit of self-reliance and fortitude , they are strong-willed and never seem to get pessimistic ". Comrade KIM JONG IL also visited the Chollima Steel Complex , the birthplace of the Chollima movement ( Chollima was a legendary flying horse of Korea which could cover a big distance in one day so the name was given to the mass innovation movement of workers in the DPRK) and other key industrial complexes and factories.
Under the leadership of comrade KIM JONG IL self -reliant industries of the DPRK such as the Vinalon industry ( Vinalon is known as Juche fibre , it is fibre produced from limestone abundant in Korea ) , the Juche steel industry and the Juche fertiliser industry were revitalised and built up . Self-reliant socialist construction surged ahead .
Today’s self-reliant People's Korea is the legacy of the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL and the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance is carried forward by dear respected Marshal KIM JONG UN,
