President KIM IL SUNG and Chollima -special article by Dr Dermot Hudson

Visiting the Democratic People's Republic of Korea last October (2019) our delegation had a lovely walk on the Moran Hill and we ended up within the sight of the famous Chollima statue which is near to the Mansu hill . The statue which rises imposingly consists of a worker and a peasant sitting on a winged horse  . The Chollima statue was of course built to symbolise the Chollima movement  which President KIM IL SUNG was the initiator of the 1950s. Chollima is the legendary winged horse of Korea which can fly 1000 ri (ri being a Korean measurement ) or 400 kilometres per day . The Chollima Movement was a movement for not just to increase productivity but to carry out innovations and also sweep away the old in all spheres of life .

The Chollima Movement is associated with the great leader comrade KIM IL SUNG . In the late 1950s the DPRK faced a very dire situation . During the Fatherland Liberation War the Yankee imperialists had pulverized the country with incessant bombing leaving very little standing . In fact the warmongering Yankee imperialists boasted that the DPRK would never rise again in a hundred years. They were wrong of course . The DPRK under the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG and by in the spirit of self-reliance reconstructed and rehabilitated the war damaged economy in the space of a few years . However this was just the start and many problems remained to be solved and many things were short . It was at this  critical juncture that enemies of the DPRK both open and hidden attacked People's Korea from all sides and even from within . The US imperialists and other international reactionaries greatly intensified their anti-communist campaign , they provoked a counter-revolutionary uprising in the Hungarian People's Republic and desperately tried to instigate or incite similar uprisings in other socialist countries. The corrupt Syngham Rhee puppet regime in south Korea  called for a 'march north ' , openly talking about invading the DPRK and also sent spies and saboteurs into the DPRK to topple the socialist system . Parallel to the moves of the imperialists and south Korean puppets modern revisionism appeared in the international communist movement . Khruschov the traitor made a disastrous speech at the 20th congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union . Basically in simple terms some in the international communist movement moved away from confronting imperialism even though the imperialists were constantly intensifying and sharpening their confrontation with the socialist countries and international communist movement , it was a softening of attitude to say the least . The modern revisionists and great power chauvinists tried to interfere in the DPRK and replace the leadership . A clique of factionalist traitors with the backing of big power chauvinists attempted to seize power at the August meeting of the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea .
In spite of the intense challenges and pressure from all sides President KIM IL SUNG did not bend nor did he break. President KIM IL SUNG sternly rejected the factionalist sycophants who believed that the DPRK should depend entirely on foreign aid  and make the DPRK a dependency of big powers or the US imperialists or both . President KIM IL SUNG knew that the challenges could be met be relying on the Korean people and not others .  President KIM IL SUNG visited the steel plant in December 1956 and told the workers that the DPRK was being attacked and pressurised from all sides - and by an internal anti party faction led by traitors President KIM IL SUNG told them that it was only the Korean working class they could rely on and appealed to them to produce an extra 30,000 tons of steel. The Kangson Steel Plant actually went off and produced an extra 60,000 tons of steel thereby doubling production in one go ! . Thus the Chollima movement was born at the Kangson  Steel plant which was later renamed the Chollima Steel Complex.
President KIM IL SUNG put forward the slogan "Let Us Dash ahead at the Speed of Chollima "
The Chollima Movement created all kinds of miracles in socialist construction  Building workers created the Pyongyang speed by building a flat in 14 minutes .Industrial output growth hit a phenomenal 44 per cent in one year . A bumper harvest was reaped . The Five Year plan was fulfilled one year ahead of schedule on all indices.

During the period 1957-1970 the DPRK's economy grew by 19.1%. In the period 1970-1979 the DPRK's industrial output value grew by 15.9% annually and during the Six Year Plan period (1971-1976) it had grown by 16.3% per annum.`Between 1946 and 1984 industrial output value increased by 431 times and national income increased by 65 times and the annual rate of growth was 14.1% .
The DPRK became known as Chollima Korea and ' the country of Chollima . This was thanks to the leadership of President KIM IL SUNG who had encouraged the Korean people to jump on the back of Chollima and ride to the brilliant Juche socialist future .
