KIM JONG IL and the Seed Theory -essay by Dr Dermot Hudson to mark the 78th anniversary of the birth of the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL

Comrade KIM JONG IL is known as a great statesman , an invincible supreme commander and also a great ideologist who wrote  "ON THE JUCHE IDEA " and many other works on the Juche Idea . Additionally the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL is known for his work in guiding art , literature and culture in the DPRK . One aspect of this that is often overlooked in the West was the creation of the seed theory .

Comrade KIM JONG IL wrote many works on art and culture such as the famous classic work 'On the Art of Cinema" which was made public on the 11th of April 1973. This is a work of 205 pages which covers a number of issues and topics relating to the cinema . In the preface comrade KIM JONG IL writes in the preface "This is the great age of Juche. The Juche age is a new historical era when the popular masses have emerged as masters of the world and are shaping their own destiny independently and creatively"

The work essentially outlines the Juche-orientated theory of cinema which had never been presented before. This work demonstrates the true genius of comrade KIM JONG IL as well as showing his in depth understanding of art and literature  In this work he elaborated the theory of the seed .  A section of the chapter "Life and Literature" has a sub-chapter titled "The seed is the core of a literary work " in which comrade KIM JONG IL expounds the theory of seed in literature writing that :
"If a writer is to produce a good piece of work, he must first select the right seed, which is the core of a literary work.  ' . This is a profound idea and serves as an important guideline in the creation of Juche-orientated literature . Comrade KIM JONG IL also wrote that
"If we compare a written work to a living organism the question arises: What is the core of the life with which the organism is imbued and where is it located? In order to build the organic structure of a literary piece, it is necessary to have a clear vision of the fundamental principle which permeates all the elements of an artistic image and welds them into an integral whole" .Reading this I was most impressed . The comparison between a written work and a living organism is a good one . As writers and creators know a literary work grows and takes shape  as they write , it is a like a tree or plant growing or even a child .This teaching inspires true literary creativity.
Comrade KIM JONG IL defines the seed as follows "The seed is the basis and the kernel of a literary work. It integrates material, theme and thought in an organic relationship. " . Another deep idea which provides a practical direction for literary and cinematic creation . It is very important to grasp the organic relationship between material , thought and theme . Indeed comrade KIM JONG IL was the first person to do so.
The relationship between the seed and them is thoroughly examined by comrade KIM JONG IL who explains that "A writer must select and fully understand the right seed on the basis of which to define the theme in concrete terms. The theme is determined and restricted by the seed. So it is impossible to discuss any themes effectively without selecting the  correct seed.:" this shows the dialectal interrelationship between  the seed and theme.
Comrade KIM JONG IL's seed theory is a great contribution to literary thought and the correctness of it has been proved in practice as the DPRK cinema enjoyed a period of the great upsurge including the production of excellent multi-part films such as "Unknown Heroes " and the Nation and Destiny", Thanks to the guidance of comrade KIM JONG IL the Korean people have a superior Juche-based socialist culture.
