Glorious 70-year history of the DPRK is the history of proud struggle in which the Republic has strengthened the self-reliant national defence to safeguard with honour the dignity and independence of the country and nation and performed ever-victorious miracles.
It is a lesson obtained at the cost of blood and a proud review of the 70-year history of the DPRK that the revolution is started and advanced by force of arms, and the destiny of the revolution and people is decided by force of arms.
Leader Kim Jong Il said.
“By thoroughly implementing the military line on self-reliant defence, our people have developed a strong defence power capable of repulsing any war provocation of the imperialists and defending the independence of the country and nation reliably."
Under the wise leadership of the Party and the leader, our Republic trained invincible revolutionary army capable of repulsing any formidable enemy at a blow, armed all the people and fortified the whole country and built independent and modern national defence industry while braving all sorts of manifold difficulties and trials, thus providing powerful self-reliant national defence for prosperity of the nation for all ages.
Geopolitical position of the country remains unchanged, but the small country that had been ruthlessly trampled down as a field of competition of big powers in the past has become the dignified country of the people that exercises big influence on the change of the world political structure and the trend of
international situation. Such reality is the miracle evoking unanimous admiration of the world people.
Since the first period of its building, our Republic has consistently held fast to the building of self-reliant national defence with it as a lifeline in building an independent and sovereign state.
From olden time people say that strong army is foundation for a prosperous country. This implies that a powerful military strength is prerequisite to a prosperous country
After the end of the World War II, the US imperialists illegally occupied south Korean in order to turn whole Korea into their colony and a military base for invading the Asian Continent and ran amuck to make preparations for aggressive war against the northern half of Korea. Such situation urgently demanded to build one's own strong regular armed forces as soon as possible.
After liberation when our country was to found its own regular army, some people who were affected by flunkeyism and dogmatism disturbed the building of regular army while asserting that it is impossible to found regular army by its own efforts without foreign aids and the army is not necessary as the north and south are divided and some others found fault with this while insisting that there is no need to build its own armed forces because the Soviet army stations in the northern half of Korea.
However, President Kim Il Sung, who felt keenly the bitter lessons that Korea had been occupied by the Japanese imperialists as it had no army, put forward the army building as well as the party building and the country building as the strategic task for a prosperous independent and sovereign state immediately after liberation and wisely led the struggle for the building of the regular army while repulsing all sorts of sophisms and disturbances.
Thanks to the outstanding leadership of the President, our Republic could found the regular revolutionary armed forces in difficult and complicated situation after liberation and consolidated defence capabilities of the country to
defend the national independence and revolutionary gains with honour in the 3-year long Fatherland Liberation War against the US aggressors.
Our Republic thoroughly held fast to the military line on self-reliant defence, put forward by the Workers' Party of Korea after the war, whose main contents are to turn the entire army into cadres, modernize the entire army, arm all the people and fortify the whole country and carried it through, thus developing the People's Army into a-match-for-a-hundred revolutionary army and turned the country into an impregnable fortress.
Thanks to the steadfast stand and revolutionary measures taken by our Republic that has waged strenuous struggle to build the self-reliant defence in the whole period of the revolution and construction with it as a lifeline and indispensable need for an independent and sovereign state, defence of the country has been remarkably strengthened and dignity of the country and safety of its people could be reliably defended.
Our Republic has solved the problem of building the self-reliant defence by relying on self-development.
Whether one relies on its own efforts or depends on others in building the self-reliant defence is one of fundamental issues related to the destiny of building defence. Defence of a country must be built with its own efforts, and this is the only way to build genuine self-reliant defence. The lifeline of defence built by depending on others will be controlled by them and such defence cannot be the genuine one for the people.
Our Republic that has the immortal Juche idea as the guiding ideology resolutely rejected dependency on outside forces not only in politics and the economy but also in defence building and solved all problems arising in building the self-reliance defence by relying on its own efforts and technology.
The east European socialist countries that had been member states of Warsaw Pact relied their national defence on the former Soviet Union and stationed the Soviet Union's military bases in their countries and deployed the Soviet military equipment. At that time, revisionists opposed our country in building self-reliant defence while forcing it to join the Warsaw Pact.
However, out of the bloody lessons that we could not but make strategic temporary retreat in the period of the Fatherland Liberation War and the historic experience of the Korean revolution, President Kim Il Sung maintained thoroughgoing independent stand and resolutely rejected the demand and saw to it that the defence building was dynamically hastened in conformity with the actual conditions of our country.
The East European countries built defence under the baton of the big country, and accordingly they laid down the rifle of the revolution and made a muddle of party and socialism. It vividly proved that the President's decision was far-sighted.
Through the Caribbean crisis caused in Cuba in the early 1960s, our Republic proved once again the validity of the WPK's line of implementing self-reliance in defence and simultaneously pushed forward the economic construction and defence upbuilding to consolidate the powerful defence with its own efforts.
Self-reliant defence serves not only as the dignity and independence of Juche Korea and guarantee for its eternal victory but also the witness of history proving the brilliant exploits and greatness of President Kim Il Sung, leader Kim Jong Il and Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, the peerlessly great persons.
Self-reliant defence of our Republic provided by President Kim Il Sung and strengthened and developed by leader Kim Jong Il is now meeting the heyday of its development thanks to the wise leadership of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and serve as the invincible treasured sword of the Korean revolution that hastens the final victory of the revolutionary cause of Juche, the cause of building a powerful socialist country.
