Cornerstone for Korea’s Independent Reunification

President Kim Il Sung made clear the three principles for Korea’s reunification on May 3, Juche 61 (1972).

In those days, the US imperialists and the south Korean puppet forces who were driven into a tight corner by the anti-fascist, democratic struggle and the movement for national reunification of the south Korean people, schemed a plot to perpetuate the division of Korea and made desperate efforts to realize it.

In August Juche 60 (1971) the President saw through the prevailing situation and put forward a proposal for wide-ranging negotiations that the DPRK was ready to make contact at any time with the ruling party of south Korean and other political parties, and public organizations and individual personages.

His proposal was hailed by the south Koreans from all walks of life.

As the situation made a U-turn by the proposal, the south Korean authorities who had refused any types of contacts with the DPRK had no other choice but to come out to the negotiating table.

Thanks to his ennobling love for the nation, virtue and seasoned political savvy, multifaceted talks were held between the north and south of Korea for the first time in the history of national division. This led to the high-level inter-Korean political talks in Pyongyang in early May Juche 61 (1972).

The President warmly welcomed the south Korean delegate who came to Pyongyang to participate in the high-level political talks, and told him in the following vein: We cannot tolerate the Korean nation being divided into two. We should reunify the country as soon as possible and hand over a reunified country to posterity. What is most important in reunifying the country is to correctly establish the fundamental principles which can provide the basis for the solution of the reunification question. Only when there are fundamental principles agreed upon by the north and the south, can the two sides make joint efforts for reunification and successfully solve all problems concerning it.

Then, he clarified the three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity for Korea’s reunification, a cornerstone for the settlement of the reunification issue.

He went on: The reunification question should on all accounts be settled independently without foreign interference and peacefully on the principle of promoting great national unity. It is the principled stand of the DPRK Government to solve the reunification question independently on the strength of the Korean nation itself. We should achieve the reunification by pooling the efforts of the Korean nation. If contacts are established and talks are held within the nation, we can remove misunderstanding and distrust and achieve national unity and reunification. We must strongly oppose the tendency of flunkeyism to rely on foreigners, rather than believing in the strength of the Korean nation. National reunification should be achieved by peaceful means without recourse to armed force, and all the problems be solved through dialogues and negotiations.

The three principles, which indicate the fundamental stand and ways for solving the reunification issue by the Korean nation itself in conformity with its will and interests, free from foreign interference, are the charter common to the nation showing the shortcut to independent reunification.

The three principles advanced by the President provided the Korean people with a reunification programme common to the nation, bringing about a new turning point in their struggle for reunification.

All the Koreans in the north, south and abroad should vigorously launch the patriotic struggle for reunification, closely united under the banner of the three principles, and thus achieve the historic cause of independent reunification without fail
