Jong Il Peak

Mt. Paektu has been called an ancestral mountain from the olden times. It is the birthplace of leader Kim Jong Il, the great leader of the Korean people.
He was born at Paektusan Secret Camp in Sobaeksu Valley of Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province on February 16, Juche 31(1942).
Preserved there are the old home of leader Kim Jong Il with historic relics.
Behind the old home there is soaring a high peak over 1 790 meters above sea level. That is called Jong Il Peak after leader Kim Jong Il.
On the peak there are three slabs of white granite engraved with the red letters of “Jong Il Pong”.
The slab engraved with the letter “Jong” is in the shape of Janggun Peak of Mt. Paektu which means that leader Kim Jong Il was born on Mt. Paektu and grew amid the gun report of the anti-Japanese war.
The slab engraved with the letter “Il” is in the shape of a large looking glass, square and flat which reflects the mind of the Korean people to hold leader Kim Jong Il in high esteem.
The slab bearing the letter “Pong” is in the shape of floral basket which portrays the best wishes for leader Kim Jong Il.
On the peak there grow about 300 species of plants including over 10 species of tall trees and 40 species of shrubs.
Jong Il Peak is all the more conspicuous for its natural environment and vegetation.
