letter of Korean Committee for Solidarity with the World People

Dear friends,

Warm greetings from the Korean Committee for Solidarity with the World People!

As you know well, it can be said that the lifetime of President Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) is devoted to the cause of Korea’s reunification.

Immediately after its liberation from Japanese military occupation (August 15, 1954) Korea was partitioned into north and south by the U.S.

From then, on the President held fast to the line of one Korea consistently and led the people dynamically to the accomplishment of the reunification cause.

At the time when the attempt to “hold a separate election and set up a separate government” in south Korea was becoming more undisguised under the manipulation of the U.S. which was pursuing the perpetual division of the Korean nation, the President set out a proposal for holding a north-south joint conference. As a result a nation-wide north-south joint conference was held in Pyongyang in April 1948 with the participation of 695 representatives of 56 political parties and public organizations in north and south Korea. The conference decided upon categorically rejecting the “separate election” in south Korea amid the unanimous approval of everyone present. In addition, the conference solemnly declared that the Korean people would establish a genuine unified government with the concerted efforts of the Korean nation on the democratic principle without interference from outside forces.

Even after the Korean war (1950-1953) which the United States had triggered off to realize its own ambition for the domination of the whole of Korea the President put forward proposals and policies for the country’s peaceful reunification one after another.

In particular, the three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity which the President had elucidated were put down clearly in the July 4 North-South Joint Statement issued in 1972 and became the general principles for Korea’s reunification amid a warm response and widespread support from broad segments of people of the international community, to say nothing of the whole Korean nation.

It can be said that the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo (DFRK) advanced by the President in October 1980 is a blueprint for Korea’s reunification which clarifies the appearance of a unified Korea and the ways and means for its realization. This proposal for establishing a unified state by means of federation on the basis of one nation, one state, two systems and two governments with the name of Koryo (918-1392) which had been the first unified state in the 5 000-year-long history of Korean nation arrested particular attention internationally as it was original, reasonable and just and fair.

In April 1993 the President made public the Ten-Point Programme for Great Unity of the Whole Nation as an important political programme for achieving the unity of the whole nation and strengthening the internal forces of reunification, transcending the differences in ideology, ideal, political view and religious belief, on the basis of love for the nation and the spirit of nation independence.

The three principles of Korean reunification, the proposal for founding the DFRK and the Ten-Point Programme for the Great Unity of the Whole Nation set out by the President are now officially recognized as the three charters for Korea’s reunification which should be maintained to the last in realizing the reunification cause.

In retrospect, firm foundations have been already laid for achieving Korea’s reunification.

They include the holding of dialogues and negotiations between north and south which have opened epoch-making phases in the history of the Korean reunification movement full of ups and downs, the formation of the Pan-national Alliance for Korea’s Reunification (Pomminryon), a united front of the whole nation, the north side’s assistance full of fraternal love given to the south Korean flood victims, and the successful holding of north-south reunification functions of various forms. All this could hardly be thinkable, were it not for President Kim Il Sung.

The President said that the greatest gift he could present to the fellow countrymen was national reunification. And he dedicated everything to the accomplishment of the reunification cause up to the last period of his life.

In 1994, too, the last year of his life, the President conducted energetic activities to bring about a historic turn in the settlement of Korea’s reunification issue. This left indelible impressions upon many people the world over. On April 13, two days before his birthday (April 15) he granted an audience to the President of the Prensa Latina News Agency of Cuba and said in the following vein: The path ahead of the Korean people is beset with grave difficulties and obstacles. But I am optimistic about the prospect of reunification. The historic cause of Korea’s reunification will be accomplished without fail.

A few days later, that is, on April 16 and 17 he, granting audiences to a press corps from The Washington Times, a press corps from the US CNN TV Broadcasting Corporation, après corps from the Japan Broadcasting Corporation etc, in succession, expressed again his firm belief in the realization of the reunification cause.

On April 21 he gave an interview to Mun Myong Ja, a Korean lady journalist of high repute resident in the US and told her that if those who had betrayed the Korean nation in the past repented of their past mistakes and turned out on the road of patriotism he would forgive them with generosity and that he would go ahead hand in hand with national capitalists in south Korea for the country’s reunification and the nation’s joint prosperity. It is said that the President gave instructions on dozens of occasions between June 20 and July 5 that year in connection with the reunification issue.

On the evening of July 7, the day before his demise, he carefully examined the historic document related to the reunification issue page after page and left his own handwriting, “Kim Il Sung July 7, 1994”.

It was the last handwriting the President left behind.

The exploits the President accomplished for Korea’s reunification cause are now shining more brightly thanks to Kim Jong Il. As the June 15 Joint Declaration adopted in 2000 and the October 4 Declaration adopted in 2007 between north and south of Korea show, the reunification of Korea is now the current of history that no one and no force can check.

The whole life of President Kim Il Sung dedicated to Korea’s reunification cause will shine forever.

We firmly believe that you and your organization whom love the peace and justice and wish the realization of the reunification of Korea will always give the full support and solidarity to the Korean people in their struggle for the peace and security and reunification of Korea.

With best regards,
