On July 20, a spokesperson for the EU picked on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), condemning its recognition of the independence of the People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Lugansk as a “violation of international law” and “hostile act towards sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
We have recently recognized the independence of the People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Lugansk. As this decision is within the legitimate rights of a sovereign state, it does not stand to reason at all that EU is making nonsensical comment about it.
EU takes its view that the international law is respected if it suits its geopolitical interests and political strategic purpose. If not, it becomes a breach of it. This is clearly a double standard and a sophism, which can convince nobody.
The EU is not in a position to talk loudly about so-called violation of sovereignty and hostile act, given that it has followed the U.S. in its illegal and inhumane hostile policy towards the DPRK.
The EU should learn first how to approach the issue in an impartial manner in strict compliance with the UN Charter and international law stipulating the principles of respect for sovereignty, sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs, rather than poking its nose into the others’ business by criticizing their exercise of sovereignty.
