It was 30 years ago on the 24th of December 1991 that the great leader comrade KIM JONG IL was appointed as Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army by the 19th plenary of the 6th Central Committee of the Workers Party of Korea , the vanguard party of the Korean people and the guiding force of socialist construction .
Comrade KIM JONG IL had grown up during the years of the Anti-Japanese armed struggle and also the great victorious Fatherland Liberation War in the 1950s. He had began his guidance of the revolutionary armed forces of the DPRK on the 25th of August 1960 when he visited the historic Seoul Ryu Kyong Su no 105th Tank Division of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) which was the first unit of the KPA to enter Seoul in June 1950 when it was liberated from US imperialist and south Korean puppet rule.
When the WPK Central Committee appointed comrade KIM JONG IL as KPA Supreme Commander , the situation was tense . Socialism in the USSR had been frustrated due to the treachery of the modern revisionists and the DPRK faced US and world imperialism on its own . Korea is a flashpoint in the world where socialism and imperialism confront each other with guns levelled at one another . The post of Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army carries a great and heavy responsibility .
After the collapse of the USSR the imperialists turned their attention to stifling the DPRK , the outpost of world socialism , by force . They put pressure on the DPRK over the nuclear issue . They demanded that the DPRK open its military bases to an ‘international inspection ‘ by their paid lackeys of the US imperialists in the UN International Atomic Energy Agency . At the same time , in 1993, the US and south Korean puppets resumed the ‘Team Spirit ‘ war exercises which had been previously cancelled . Supreme Commander comrade KIM JONG IL swiftly dealt blows to the US imperialists and their puppets . Firstly , by declaring the DPRK ‘s intention to withdraw from the one-sided and unfair ‘Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty ,secondly by issuing order 0034 which put the KPA , Worker- Peasant Red Guard and Red Young Guards onto a semi-war state ready to defend the independent socialist homeland to the death against the US imperialists . The US had no choice but to back down and enter into talks with the DPRK and eventually conclude the DPRK-US Agreed Framework .
Comrade KIM JONG IL pushed ahead with the Songun revolutionary leadership that he had started in 1960 . He continued to build up the Juche-based revolutionary armed forces making them strong in ideology as well as technique and weaponry . He also cemented army -people unity . Whilst negotiations took place with the US , he ensured that there was sharp vigilance against US military moves . I recall one incident . One Saturday in December 1994 I woke up and turned my radio to listen to the news on BBC Radio Four . The announcer said ‘ Anti-aircraft gunners in north Korea say that they shot down a US army helicopter’ . I felt an air of excitement surge through me like an electric current . I felt elated and immediately put on the DPRK song ‘ No Motherland Without You ‘ which is the theme song of comrade KIM JONG IL .
Comrade KIM JONG IL by adroitly commanding the revolutionary armed forces and by intensely developing Songun politics in depth , led the Korean people to victory over the US in the ‘war without gunshots ‘. The DPRK conducted its first nuclear test on the 9th of October 2006 and a subsequent nuclear test on the 25th of May 2009.
Thanks to the brilliant command of Supreme Commander comrade
KIM JONG IL People’s Korea became an invincible socialist military power of Juche , a nuclear power .
So on the occasions of the 10th anniversary of the demise of comrade
KIM JONG IL and the 30th anniversary of his appointment as KPA Supreme Commander we remember a Great Supreme Commander ,
