The DPRK initially had a good start in the Olympics , at one stage it was fifth in the number of medals awarded in the Olympics, ahead of Russia, Brazil and the UK. Even one capitalist newspaper was forced to admit that "The performance of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has been the early surprise of the Games " . The DPRK has already surpassed its performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics . What is particularly striking is that the DPRK has only 56 athletes entered in the Olympics whereas the UK has 541 . The DPRK actually has a great number of medals per capita than south Korea. The DPRK has 1 gold medal per 14 Olympians whereas south Korea has 1 gold medal per 27.2 Olympians. The UK has 1 gold medal per 54.1 Olympians , the US has 1 per 25 , China has 1 per 19.8 , Russia has 1 per 108 and Brazil 1 per 258. So although the DPRK may not be ahead in absolute terms in relative terms, in terms of medals per capita it is ahead of the other countries.
What is the secret of the DPRK's success ? It is the people-centred socialist system of the DPRK and the leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Un and the
Workers' Party of Korea. In the DPRK there are excellent sports facilities such as Chongchun Street in Pyongyang which has various facilities and the new
Taekwondo Hall. In fact the government of the DPRK has invested heavily in sports and has increased spending on sports by 6.9% .
Children are able to practice sports from an early age not just at school but at Children's Palaces and childrens camps.
Under the Juche-based socialist system of the DPRK people are encouraged to develop their talents as the Juche idea is based on the concept that everyone is the master of one's self and that independence and creativty should be enhanced.
In the DPRK sport serves the people. It is not a plaything of the giant corporations nor does so-called professionalism in sport divert resources away from sporting activities for the masses.
Moreover the DPRK is a united and harmonious society united around supreme leader Marshal Kim Jong Un. DPRK Olympians have a deep sense of socialist patriotism. They also take inspiration from the DPRK's great leaders for example DPRK weightlifter Om Yong Chol said " ''I believe Kim Jong Il gave me the record and all my achievements. It is all because of him.'' and female weightlifter Rim Jong Sim said "I thought that it was my duty as an athlete of the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea to give joy to our supreme leader, General
Kim Jong Un," Rim said. "And at that moment that was my motivation. To
exert extra power to please the general."
"The only thing that I can think of right now is to run to our dear leader with my gold medal in hand,"
The superiority of Juche-based socialism is being displayed at the Olympics and the day when the DPRK will outrank the giants of Olympic sport , will come sooner rather than later.
